Hi all. I haven't been on the board lately; dealing with gut issues again.
Question: can Lyme (and/or coinfections) induce non-specific colitis? And how is colitis confirmed? I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy w/biopsies last Oct and both came back OK except for "inflammation in the antrum" (area leading from stomach into small intestine).
A GF diet has helped me a LOT, but I'm still having flares where eating causes intense pain for weeks and I loose a lot of weight during that period.
My LLMD recently suggested trying Asacol to calm down gut inflammation. Although I am severely allergic to sulfa, apparently Asacol is the more "active" part of it's precursor that DID contain sulfa. Seems that it is truly sulfa-free, but, just to make sure, has anyone with a sulfa allergy had problems with it?
Thanks heaps!

I have a sulfa allergy and crohns. I have been on asacol with no problems. Before I knew I had Lyme I was on remicade , prednisone, and then humira I got horrifying neurological problems. I can totally relate to your symptoms my inflammation is mostly in myterminal ileum.

Gatorade girl, Is there something in particular that started you turning the corner? Or a string of somethings? Could you elaborate a little bit? Thanks!

I think was a string of things....gluten free diet, I eat small meals, I don't eat anything chilled...it sets me off in pain, antinausea medications, iv fluids, treatment for Lyme, asacol, paleomeal shakes, consistent taking of both probiotics and saccrymycees boulardii. I hope that helps. I have had the diagnosis of crohns for 22 years. It seems to be getting with Lyme treatment. I never was on a gluten free diet until July and it helped turn the corner. I also avoid my food triggers....everyone is different, but I have problems with garlic, and spice.

I'm in the same boat Gatorade Girl is/was in. Only I use Pentasa, since it's not my large colon that's facing the majority of inflammation, it's the small bowel.
I have used Asacol though. I also used a lot of the other drugs mentioned prior to my diagnosis with Lyme Disease.
To this day they still do not know if they are separate conditions or not. I think they "are the same."
