For those of you treating children, what kind of herx reactions have you observed?

I am getting really worried about my 4 yr. old. This is day 3 of amoxicillin. The first evening after his first day on abx, I heard him moaning in his room at night, so I went to check on him and he began screaming that his knee needed a bandaid...for over an hour. This was one of his symptoms pre-lyme diagnosis - he would wake up at night screaming his legs or feet hurt/burned for hours. Anyhow, I put a bandaid on his knee (just to make him happy), but he could not get comfortable for a while, but he finally went back to sleep.

Last night, woke up around 1AM, tummy hurting. Nothing too major...probably side effect from amoxicillin.

Today, he had a severe emotional outburst where he was slamming doors, screaming at me that he hated me (he just turned 4..such strong words for a baby - we don't use or allow words like that in our house), trying to hit me, kicking his brother, destructive to anything he could get his hands on, and in the middle of his hysterical screaming/crying fit, he began laughing hysterically...and then back to crying/screaming. It was REALLY, REALLY disturbing to watch. It was all I could do to hold myself together.

He has also been walking in circles. He cannot sit still and is just acting strangely. He told me today that is eye was "foggy" and that his head was hurting. He does have one eye that is weaker, but now we are wondering if it is from lyme.

This is SOOO very upsetting for me to watch...
is he going to get better??!!!

I am sorry. It is so hard to see your child suffer, He will get better. Take it as a good sign that he is having that reaction...bugs are dying!

My son is not as young as yours but most of his herx's seem to be emotional rather than physical.

From what I have heard from other parents, their childrens herx's are emotional as well.

Vision issues are also common.

Lemon water and warm epsom salt baths really seem to help settle my son down. He actually asks me daily now for lemon water in his lunch.

Is your son taking any probiotics or supplements?

I'm sorry this is happening, and it IS very hard to watch your child suffer and become a completely different person. It is temporary though. He will have good days and bad days.

Unfortunately, it does seem to go in cycles, but as hard as it is, on the bad days, know that it actually is progress.

Hang in there. [group hug]

Thank you for the support. I am really sick with lyme too, so it makes it extra challenging. He has actually been grabbing my lemon water whenever I am drinking it and wants to drink it too.

I have him on probiotics and his multi-vitamin. I don't know what else to give him. Any suggestions?

I am going to take him to his opthamalogist again this week to have his eye checked again and he has his 4 yr. well-check.

My LLMD said that children are so resilient and respond really well to treatment. They don't have the environmental toxin build-up and acquired viruses that adults also have to deal with....BUT it's really hard watching him go through this b/c I know how miserable it is. He is not nearly as sick as me, thank goodness!

I just want this nightmare to be over!! Thanks again.
