My aunt is in the hospital and is to begin IV abx today. She has already been on orals for a few days.
I have some s. boullardi, and plan to give her some to prevent c-diff. She has a chronic UTI and has been on abx off and on for a while now.
Is one capsule per day enough and what time of day should I give it to her?

My LLMD wants people on one pill 2-3 times a day for prevention.
I take the Klaire Labs brand. Not sure if that has more or less S. Boulardi than the brand you have so that could make a difference as well.
It also depends on the medication. I am about to start one that will really increase the risk of C. Diff so then she will increase that to one pill 4 times a day.
She also has me do some other probiotics as well. I will increase those also with the new medication.

Dear linky, Bless you & your aunt!
I use Florastor, which is 250 mg/cap.
My LLMD has us all on 1 cap, 2x/day when on ANY abx. Required.
My LLMD suggested increasing to 2 caps, 2x/day if fighting an active yeast infection.
Florastor can be taken anytime. And it doesn't need to be 12 hrs apart. Does not interfere with abx therapy.

If I give her a probiotic, ie. Theralac, does it need to be given away from her abx? She has a raging yeast infection with 10 more days of oral abx to go.
I asked the staff at the assisted living to ask the md for an antifungal such as difulcan. She is really frail, so I don't want to screw anything up, but am worried about the yeast and possible c-diff.
Leave it to our ownderful modern medicine and hospitals to send her home in worse shape than when she got there.

Does S. Boulardi need to be taken away from other probiotics? And on an empty stomach? If yes to both, it makes timing difficult!

Nope! It can be taken anytime. Easy and effective.

My LLMD tells me it can be taken with abx, no prob.
With all the nutritional supps & Rx meds that assist me in battling LD, my dosing schedule is 6 unique "dosing events" per day, three with empty stomach and three with meals. I typed up a chart, print it out, and continually update w/ any changes. This is NOT easy with neuroborreliosis, but it's a must for me to have a chart to follow!
I take Florastor at these two "dosing events":
Empty stomach 6:30 am 2 Florastor 250 mg caps with lemon water (along with aloe vera juice, Body Biotics [pre/probiotic soil-borne organism blend], spirulina, bromelain, Curamin, Glucosamine sulfate, taurine, 50 mg Vit B-6, esterified Vit C)
and
Empty stomach 8:30 p.m. 2 Florastor 250 mg caps with lemon water (along with aloe vera juice, Body Biotics, spirulina, bromelain, coconut kefir, Curamin, magnesium, L-lysine, L-tyrosine, 50 mg Vit B-6, esterified Vit C, Sound Sleep capsules)
My LLMD has reviewed, commented on, and approved supplements & scheduling of my doses. But WE ARE ALL UNIQUE, so ymmv.
Always discuss your meds and supps with your LLMD. Between visits, local pharmacists can be very helpful.

Dear linky123, How's your aunt? I pray she's getting stronger!
Thank you for looking out for her. She's blessed you advocate for her.
Yes, probiotics must be taken AWAY from abx.
The term antibiotic means "anti-life". Most abx are anti-bacterial.
Probiotic means "pro-life." Most probiotics contain beneficial bacteria.

S. boulardii is a beneficial yeast, and cannot be killed by antibiotics. Thus, it can be taken at the same time as antibiotics.
I had C. diff for 11 months. Once I recovered, I was hesitant to go on antibiotics, but I needed to. I took one florastor in the morning with my antibiotic, and one other probiotic in the evening (2 hours after the last dose of antibiotics). I did not get C. diff.
If you aunt is in the hospital, you must let the doctors and nurses know that you are giving her a supplement. At times, probiotics are contraindicated in certain medical situations.
Best, Timaca
