- Food.
Lots of fiber. Lots and lots of vegetables of all colors. Whole non-gluten grains also provide good nutrients and some fiber that is not in vegetables alone. Low-sugar fruits, too. Dark Berries, tart plums, tart apples.
The author of "The One Earth Herbal Sourcebook" (Tillotson) writes that if one does not eat enough vegetables and fruits, they cannot properly detox (as food provides antioxidants to nourish cells and fiber that absorbs toxins that carry out metabolic waste).
Lemon in with hot water and dash of stevia.
Lots of water. Hot herb and green teas. The hot liquid is very good.
Flax meal. -

Linseeds -- you can sprinkle them on your food & it is a great source of fiber. I also put it in my morning shake (1 TBS). you can buy them at Whole Foods & keep them in the fridge.

Just got this recipe from my nurse today. (Son has BM trouble.)
Brigham and Young did a study on it in reference to women and pelvic floor dysfunction. No reference, though.
Here it is:
1 cup applesauce 1 cup bran 3/4 cup prune juice
eat 1-2 tbs/day

- cascara sagrada or senna are not good to take except in an urgent situation. One of those can also stain the colon and that makes colon diagnostics very difficult, say for a colonoscopy.
RHUBARB, however, not alone but as part of a formula, can safety be used for a few weeks at a time. Still, nothing should be used day in and day out. Food, other nutrients that the body needs but also helps, such as magnesium, are the best daily helpers.
Seven Forests Rhubarb 17 is a good formula. -

Senna is nasty - you don't want to take thar or phylium.
Psyllium can cause Melanosis Coli (it showed up in my colonoscopy)
My Gastro Dr. said to take Miralax (many drs. are now recommending it) but my Lyme Dr. says no. Benefiber is OK and does no harm.

The Ultra mangosteen juice made by Trace Minerals makes intestines regular - I drink about a half ounce in the morn and eve, started with a lot more when I first began it to eliminate Lyme eye symptoms.

Ground flaxseeds. Take a tablespoon or two daily. You can put it in your cereal or sprinkle it on food etc. Or you can just stir it into some water and drink it straight down...although that isn't the most palatable way to do it lol!
It is also a great source for Omega 3's which is what I use it for.
I have found that flaxseed works better than my fish oil pill for help with joint pain. I should note my joint pain is very mild to begin with but the flaxseed does make it pretty much nonexistent.
Oh and I don't get the preground seeds. I buy the whole seeds and grind them myself with a coffee grinder. I keep the ground seeds in the freezer and it stays good for a month. You don't want to keep them out because the oils in it can cause the ground seeds to go rancid.

Levaquin has helped tremendously with my GI symptoms. This is probably not the answer that you were looking for though.
I also take 600mg Mag Malate and 4,2000mg Mag Oxide daily. The mag oxide is not absorbed well and basically only helps keep me more regular.
Miralax is my go to when things get really backed up. You can't take too much of it. If you do you will get diarrhea then you know to back down on the dosage. You don't absorb it so you don't have to worry about med-herb interactions.
Before you try taking cascara and senna daily you may want to talk with your doctor/ ND. If I remember correctly (could be wrong here) they are stimulant laxatives and your body can become reliant on them over time. Bulk forming laxatives and stool softeners do not cause problems with daily use.
One last thought, my sister believes that coffee keeps her regular. She doesn't like the taste but drinks it every morning because of this. I've not noticed this affect but have heard it from others so it might be worth a try.

I second the suggestion for magnesium oxide. It was the only form of magnesium to move my bowels. It only worked on an empty stomach for me though, in the morning with a full water bottle of water.
Cascara Segrada and Senna can be addictive and can stain the lining of your intestines, so I prefer to use other herbs like triphala.
As for foods (since you asked for recipes), soaked, well cooked dried beans help. I'd recommend soaking them for at least 20 hours.
You can stew dried organic (nitrate/sulfite free) prunes. This doesn't always work for me, but it helps to soften stools.

The prune recommendation reminded me, there is a recipe referred to as "the bomb". It is a combination of half cup prune juice and half cup apple juice. Drink it hot like tea. I learned this from some older nurses at the hospital.

My son has had issues for awhile and we are giving him prunes and figs along with breakfast and dinner, as well as a green smoothie (spinach, mango, ice, blueberries, water, and a splash of OJ.) once a day. He is also drinking a lot of water and uses an herb called biocolotox that our practitioner gave us. It is helping!!!

Hey I second kimmie. Rocephin!!!!! I know its not natural but this has been the only antibiotic that has made bms soft.
I also liked the rhubarb. I got it from the health food store in the bulk herbs. Steep like a tea and drink. It's very tart it doesn't add bulk like all the fiber stuff. Fiber just bunged me up more.
A few other things that helped short term was Dr. shultz formula I and II. Nature Sunshine LBS II did help, and the oxypowder stuff worked too but was a bit expensive. And then theres always the good ol enema.

Align is a GI probiotic that solved my digestive problems. I was having terrible bloating, gas, gurgling issues and pain. The bonus is that it also solved my constipation. (I am not on abx).
It was suggested to me by my doctor, so I quit my other probiotics I was taking and started on Align once daily. Takes a while to get your stomach issues fixed, not an instant fix -- took me 3 weeks before I felt improvement, but she assured me it would help, and it did!
Google Align and you can read lots about it. Supposedly, it works for many people who have IBS, and I don't know if I did or not, but I'm happy with taking it daily.
On the negative side...it is expensive and it doesn't help everyone. You can read other peoples' reviews, also. That always helps me in deciding whether I want to buy something or not.
All the best,
lifeline

My old LLMD used to call his particular brand of magnesium oxide "blast-a-caps". I haven't found a brand as good as that one yet. Sometimes they really did live up to their nickname!

Something you can eat daily and it will not cause yeast is wheat bran. Buy it in bulk at a health food store. It costs only pennies.
You can sprinkle the wheat bran on any moist food. It is tasteless. You can also learn to eat it plain, followed by a lot of water.
It is totally dry, like sawdust. So, it takes a lot of water to swallow a spoonful. Take a few spoonfuls per day. No calories either. In fact, since it is total fiber, it is probably negative calories.
The only caution is that if you take it with milk, you will likely not get the benefit of the calcium because excessive wheat bran can inhibit the absorption of calcium.
Wheat bran is the best kept secret. It has worked for even the toughest cases. You can eat it daily for years and it costs practically nothing.
Wheat bran is the brown, outer husk of the wheat kernel that is discarded to make white flour. It is what makes bran muffins brown and full of fiber.
I understand studies have been done that show that it prevents colon cancer. So, I have read that gastrointerologists are now into it for their personal health.
