Would one with Babesia usually have some type of abnormal labs? Seeing that it is a red blood cell parasite, I would expect there would be an abnormal amount of red blood cells show in a CBC.
I've had extensive blood work, with no abormalities at all. I do have all the symptoms of Babesia though.

I have normal labs and a 1:20 antibody on B. Duncani IFA. I also would think that RBC count would be off, but I'm learning my body isn't very good at doing what it's supposed to do!
Even though Mepron is making me feel really sick, I do think it's helping.

I had a million different labs done and everything was within normal range. Babesia microti was found by PCR.

I have perfectly normal labs and a 1:2,048 IgG titer on WA-1 from LabCorp. Explain that.

Sometimes it is a matter of timing. If bloodwork is done right before the bacteria multiply you might have an elevated RDW (red blood cell width). When babesia multiplies it bursts the red blood cells and the body reacts to the foreign material by causing sweats and chills. If a urine sample is taken at the right time you might have red blood cells detected in the urine sample.
And if you have lots of red blood cells killed off frequently then you could be anemic (usually iron deficiency I think) or you could have elevated bilirubin from the body clearing out the red blood cells slowly.
But as many others have said often your bloodwork is normal. Actually if you do aggressive babs treatment then some of the same things I just mentioned may show abnormal during treatment.

I have had abnormally high bilirubin many times Bea. A hematologist said it's a byproduct of my RBCs bursting, but no explanation. High Eos on my WBCs at times. High free plasma hemoglobin at times indicating RBC destruction, but NEVER an abnormal CBC Diff test. Odd, huh? Perfect regular Hg on my CBC test 50 times straight. Iron is always normal.
This disease is beyond freaky.
