I have read numerous accounts of people who lose weight when they get sick with Lyme. But I don't often see anything about weight gain.

I have a crappy metabolism to start, and Lyme doesn't seem to be helping. Thyroid meds don't seem to help either.

Are there others who have gained weight or at least had a difficult time losing while sick?

In Dr. S's book "the Lyme Disease Solution", he mentions that 80% of lyme patients are overweight or obese.

There are lots of threads in the archives of people who gain weight and can't lose. Some of us gain a LOT of weight rapidly.

If you do a search on past threads, there are many titled "weight gain" or "obesity"

As Terry says, it's very common with lyme. For many with lyme, there is a substantial early weight loss of about 30 pounds. Then, there is often a huge weight gain for no apparent reason but the endocrine stress and excess cortisol are partly the reason. that is explained in the book below.

Lyme is just one of many stealth infections that can cause either loss (early on) or gain (usually later). Whichever, adrenal support is key to normalizing that. (With the assumption that everyone already has a healthful eating plan).

This book is specific to lyme and other chronic stealth infections. The author discusses the endocrine connection and effects of STRESS on a person with such infections. You can read customer reviews and look inside the book at this link to its page at Amazon.

Thank you! I assumed it was related to an imbalance in the endocrine system.

And yes, I already have a healthy diet. I've actually worked with trainers who are equally frustrated, so I guess I'm glad to see I'm not the only one, though it still makes me crazy.

BHealthyNow-
Another reason for weight gain can be leptin resistance.

Leptin resistance
Signs are rapid weight gain and inability to
lose despite caloric restriction

Glad I'm not alone, also.

I knew my weight problem had to be related somehow. I've never been a big eater. I ate low-cal, low-fat for a long time and just kept gaining weight.

I've been low-carb for over 6 years and I lost 30 pounds at first, but then hit a plateau and haven't lost since. I have very little appetite, I go to the gym when I'm up to it, and I can't lose a pound. I've been happy just to stop the gaining.

Very interesting question/thread...

When I was on death's door...I looked like an AIDS patient...I had lost 30+ pounds.

After starting treatment, I gained most of it back.

Now, with starting mepron (where you have to eat 25 grams of fat with every dose!), well, let's just say, I NEED to do a triathlon now! [Smile]

I also am one who last a lot of weight. I lost down to 102 pounds and stayed there for almost a year. Then I started a psych med and in the past 3 months I have gained 16 pounds. I am assuming its the medication, but wonder if something has changed due to the lyme.

Everything changes from lyme. Be sure to see the "Potbelly" book for how. Then ADRENAL SUPPORT is vital. But so is acceptance and just living as healthful lifestyle as possible. They weight often just doesn't come off until the stealth infection(s) and adrenal dysfunction are much better.

Many psych meds can cause major weight gain and endocrine disruption that makes loosing it very hard.

In addition to the endocrine dysfunction from lyme, Cpn, etc. - the MITOCHONDRIAL damage is also a huge consideration regarding energy and weight gain. More about that - and what can help - here:

Yep-- I will gain and loose with no real explaination-- its sooo annoying. I went to bed one night and woke up the next day 4 pounds heavier! And it won't budge. I'm a small girl so 4 pounds is enough for me to have to buy new clothes.

I know its inflamation/ or water weight, because I cannot loose it no matter what I eat or how much exercise I do. Its extreemly frustrating. This has happened back and forth over the last 2 years. In 6 months I'm sure ill wake up and all the weight will be gone-- its happened before. i Wish we understood this more.

Also, I seem to be unable to get full lately. I am constantly really hungry, which is the exact opposite of being on Mepron where I can't eat anything. (And the weight gain happened before my appetite went nuts.)

When I was really sick, I lost 30 lbs in two months. As I got better, the weight came back! It's so frustrating. I looked good with the weight loss, but I felt physically awful.

Go figure.
