My 4 year old has an external vaginal yeast infection that will not go away. It gets a bit better when I apply Triple Paste AF (antifungal diaper rash paste), but it always comes back if I don't apply it daily.

We have recently started Diflucan (3 days ago) and the infection seems to be getting worse! I have also been using Lotrimin cream.

I had tested the Diflucan when we took her for electrodermal screening yesterday and it did not test well for killing her candida. I wanted to try the Diflucan for a few days anyway just to be sure. Well, I think the machine was right because the infection looked worse tonight.

I am going to stop the Diflucan and would love to hear of any natural remedies that we can use to clear this up. She is on probiotics twice daily but I'm looking for things I can apply locally.

I have read about getting garlic paste or using tea tree oil. I'm just wondering if anyone has tried these or if you have other ideas.

I have tried some baths in GSE which may help some but I think I need to apply something topically.

Thanks,

tickbattler

Try applying some coconut oil and maybe alternately some yogurt with probiotics added. I got rid of my candida this way. Also mix coconut oil in her food.

The garlic paste and tea tree oil may be irritating to her delicate tissue. I used to use vaseline to get rid of my kids diaper rash and it always worked. I hope you find something to help her.

Poor little girl! I would be afraid to try garlic, GSE or tea tree oil on her sensitive skin. They might cause burning or pain.

Lotrimin cream should work but since it's not can you call and ask the doctor for Nystatin powder? You can apply that topically to help absorb moisture and kill the yeast.

I agree with Gael that garlic and tea tree oil would burn beyond belief. So can boric acid, which is often used in vaginal capsule suppositories.

Coconut oil can help but it did not help me nearly enough with painful burning from other issues. I would avoid anything that has any dyes or petroleum product (it can lock in heat and cause more burning sensation).

Probiotics are good, but may not be enough to soothe the tissue. Still, maybe twice a day, some probiotics and then some calendula gel at other times.

Boericke & Tafel Califlora Calendula Gel
-------------------------------------------

For other burning and painful vulva issues, my ND suggested Boericke & Tafel Califlora Calendula Gel and it worked very, very well. So soothing, nearly instantly. Literally, it saved my life as the pain was nearly unbearable.

But it needs to be reapplied after each use of the restroom. A little bit on a clean piece of tissue is something that I think a four-year old should be able to do herself, preparing it in advance of using the toilet so as to keep both the contents and the outside of the tube clean and uncontaminated.

This is the brand I suggest as other brands are more oily. This is the consistency of a jell-o but it stays and washes off very nicely, no oily residue.

I would get a couple tubes of this. Keep on in every purse so that you have it when you are out and about. If she goes to school, have a tube at school for her and one in her bag, etc.

You can definitely apply the probiotics topically. I've heard of dipping a tampon in probiotics but for a 4 year old, I kinda like the coconut oil idea -- with the probiotics mixed in. Poor little thing. Hope you find some relief.

I also see calendula mentioned here. Weleda has a really nice kid's calendula diaper cream.

A question would be that as coconut oil and calendula have anti-fungal properties, would they negate probiotics ?

Mixing probiotics with a little almond oil and alternate with either coconut oil or calendula gel may be an option. Almond oil is soothing but not as likely to negate probiotics.

Thanks all for your quick replies. Thankfully, the infection is not painful for her because it has been kept from getting too bad with the creams...it just won't clear up so I need to try something else. It did itch her a little bit tonight even though she denied it.

It does look a bit like diaper rash - just red. I'm curious, is diaper rash actually candida? I don't think so, but Gael's comment got me wondering.

Gael - thanks - I love the coconut oil idea...she tested well with the EDS machine for an oral product called Caproyl (a medical food made up of modified coconut oil and safflour oil), which showed it helped kill Candida. I never thought of rubbing it on her! But I'm wondering if I should just use the extra virgin organic coconut oil that I use for cooking once in a while. It is more like a paste, where as the Caproyl is liquid. What did you use?

I will also get some yogurt and add in a bunch of probiotics...that is another great idea.

I'm curious to know how long you treated before yours went away and whether you used both coconut and yogurt every day. Did you apply each twice daily?

Sammy - thanks for the nystatin powder idea...I will ask the ped about that.

Keebler - Thanks for the links...I do have some calendula ointment. I think it is the califlora one...need to double check...Do you think this ointment helps kill yeast or is more for soothing the symptoms? I will give it a try too.

Thanks so much!

Our pediatrician recommended the following for treating an external yeast infection:

First, gently wash the area with lukewarm water and soap. Dry thoroughly.

Then, apply these meds in this order - Lotrimin, then Desitin or A&D Ointment over that. Finally, sprinkle Caldesene powder (a powder containing Zinc Oxide which can be used for babies as well as adults).

NOTE: Caldesene is not available over-the-counter. Ask your pharmacist if they have any or you might have to order some.

This will form a seal and allow the infection to heal. Try not to wipe it off. Do this every day if you can until the infection is gone.

It worked for us. Hope it does the same for your child.

Hi Tick,

I used the coconut oil (same as the extra virgin one you use for cooking)alternately through the day.

You can do the coconut oil during the day (keep repeating as needed) and the poultice of yogurt and probiotics at night)Hope you find a solution for your little one. Keep us posted.

P. S. If you leave the coconut oil out at room temperature it will become liquid and is fine to leave it out of the fridge.

Gael

Yes---as long as you don't contaminate the jar with fingers or double dipping it keeps.

But my jars never last that long...I use it every day all over and in...

Diaper rash is caused by yeast.

Desitin or A&D ointment will form a barrier to protect her skin against wetness if she wears a diaper. If she doesn't wear a diaper then it would probably be best to skip these ointments and allow her skin to breathe.

The calendula cream sounds like a great option to help heal many skin problems. I'll have to check it out next time I go to the health food store.

This has been great for my wife (and me too) for yeast problems http://www.jernigannutraceuticals.com/Yeast-Ease_long_new.html

If you have any questions about it contact my wife daisyrlb here on lymenet and she'll be glad to answer any questions you have. It's worked great for her yeast problems. All natural, non toxic, and it works for us.

Also a consideration with localized pain and tender personal tissue: if possible, get unbleached or chlorine-free bath tissue. It can really make a huge difference. Seventh Generation is a brand that comes to mind.

Underwear is also best if all cotton and not bleached or with any fabric softener used in the laundry. Seventh Generation and BioKleen are good laundry soaps.

Avoid bubble bath products but a good shower gel can be used instead, such as: Avalon Organics Lemon or Peppermint shower gel. No petroleum products - or any artificial ingredients) are used in Avalon Organics products. You can find them at some markets and at www.vitacost.com (usually for less money).

Sleeping without underwear is best for increased air circulation and less trapped moisture that can promote candida growth. Loose fitting clothing by day can help, too. Nylon or microfiber tights and synthetic fiber close fitting pants can create more warmth and trap moisture.

www.LLBean.com - LL Bean has good quality adult and children's clothing and focuses on cotton. Lands' End does to some degree but I've noticed the quality of their clothes taking a decline in recent years.

bicarbonate -- baking soda and potassium bicarbonate. Bicarbonates are very antifungal and alkalizing inside the body. Talk to your doctor about how to include them.
