Anyone bothered my indigestion/acid reflux? I have days where mine is very bad. Can't seem to tolerate any raw veggies or fruits or spicy foods.

I thought it was the abx and supplements but have stopped them for a couple of days , this is day three and the darn indigestion /acid reflux is back. So its good to know maybe it isn't the meds I was taking. I don't have it everyday , seems to come and go .

Tks.

Make sure you don't have yeast. I had yeast before I began treatment for Lyme.

I've had this for many years, and am learning now that it is quite common with Lyme patients. Mine has become chronic inflamation of the esophagus so I always have to be careful.

I have heard from some that it clears up with treatment.

Apple cider vinegar with the mother, and a little honey in some water is supposed to be a good cure for acid reflux. When I was on doxy and put cider vinegar on my salads it got rid of the acid reflux which was so bad it burned my throat raw.

I had a really bad bout of it last week which may have been from Mepron and Zithro. Not knowing what was wrong, I went to the ER and they mistook it for a heart attack.

So be aware that it can irritate the vagus nerve which will give you a pounding heart and also may give you pain below your TMJ joint radiating into your teeth.

Some people have low stomach acid. Google and read about low HCL and ox bile. Supplementing HCL has been helpful for me.

Nefferdun, do you have an article you recommend on the vagus nerve? I get shortness of breath when I get indigestion (mine isn't yet under control) and it drives me crazy. I also have TMJ, though it's fixed, it sometimes still bothers me.

I have a family history of reflux and TMJ .... this isn't Lyme-related for me.

IF you do not have a hiatal hernia "Persimmon Tea" has done wonders for me and those I have turned onto making it for themselves!!! A shot glass full AM and PM before you eat really settles it down. Heard about it on the "People's Pharmacy" and it has really helped and it is all natural!!! I put a quart or more of water in a saucepan and bring it to a boil, then I add 1 cup thinnly sliced fresh peeled ginger, 3 cinnamon sticks, and aguave syrup to sweeten the taste and then let it all simmer for 45 min. Then add 1 cup dried Persimmons and let it steep another 45 min. Let it cool and I pour mine into empty wine bottles and put the topper/plug on it and refrigerate. Another lovely side effect is that it cuts my sugar craving down ALOT! If you want it to look pretty pink add a few Cinnamon Hot candies and put in a clear bottle and give out to your acidy refluxy friend for Xmas! I got a fellow Postal employee totally off Prilosic and he swears by it and puts it in his tea drink when he is on the road hauling mail. The ginger calms the stomach, Persimmons provide good enzymes, and cinnamon is healthy and I chose aguave syrup over sugar since it is a slow release healthy sugar to your system ...doesn't cause bad insulin surges. You can add more or less cinnamon or ginger depending on how it makes you feel, I like more ginger so increased mine from half a cup to a cup....I also refrigerate the sliced ginger and persimmons and if I get a snack attack chew on those and I am good to go. [Smile] You can get dried Persimmons online at Nutz R Us or surf the net to dredge some up....beats the Nexium, Prilosic drug stuff!

I didn't even know I had acid reflux. Had an endoscope in Oct and I have an esophageal ulcer.

Guess I have an Hiatal hernia too.

My llmd did say it's from the disease...

Sure was a new one to me that this was common...

I had the surgery to fix my hiatal hernia (Nissan fundiplication...sp?) which relieved me of 99% of my heartburn... had diaphragm damage from the hernia as well.. You might look into that hernia..

Wow, lots of us with hiatal hernias.. I was told I may need to get the nissan fundoplication but I would want to put that off as long as possible. Seems like a big surgery..

Are there other symptoms for a hiatal hernia? I have had severe pain just near my belly button. I now am getting all of the acid stuff. It seems to be worse at night when I go to bed.

Also - what type of xray or test would show this? I had an MRI that showed dilated pancreatic duct but nothing else.

So glad I found this post.

I had the barium swallow Xrays along with a nuclear (I think) test where I ate an egg with toast along with a radioactive substance... It was clear when looking at the monitor that all the food was stuck up in my chest/esophagus...

Other hiatal symptoms in my case were severe pain when food passed through my diaphragm.. Difficulty breathing after meals(food in esophagus/chest area) Very bad belching sessions, many small belches in a row followed by intense heartburn...

Mine was found with an endoscopy, but I also had the barium swallows, several of them.
My symptoms are pretty much what Roger describes as well as feeling really really ill if I ate too much.

Eating too much with a haital is a big problem, does make you feel terrible... I had that along with 33-36 symptoms for Lyme... at least the nissan helped with the hernia problems...

Haital hernia? Wonder if that's what's troubling the man w/ Alzheimer's who couldn't swallow without gagging...

Why do haital hernias develop?

There's alot of reasons why they can develop but I don't think one ever know why they got theirs. It can be from pregnancy, obesity, abdominal injury, IBS, severe vomitting..among others..

If he has a severe hernia it could be the cause, but he would definitely need to have it looked into. I know that even swallowing pills is hard for me, and they sometimes come back up.. so I have to drink alot of water to keep them down.

Gerd is one of my lyme and one of my yeast symptoms. If I sleep a little propped up and on my left side, I'm fine.

Any of you get tested for H Pylori? That's what mine turned out to be. Cleared up after a week of Levaquin that I was given to treat a sinus infection. Ten years of misery ended just like that!

That's a good thought, although most of us have had endoscopies and they test routinely for H. Pylori with those.

I have had acid reflux for years, off and on, almost always on. I had a hiatal hernia diagnosed from endoscopy. One time it went away was with seriously high antifungal treatment. I imagine there are many people without lyme where their real problem with acid reflux is yeast/fungus.

Then with lyme treatment targeting both borrelia and bartonella, it is really happening a lot more, every good killing spree gives me terrible acid reflux and requires to sleep half-sitting.

All this makes me think this hiatal hernia is a too-easy answer, and not the real story. I am expecting with complete lyme treatment all this will work well again.

Ok, I am going to put this out there for whatever it's worth........

My husband always had acid reflux/heartburn and yes he has Lyme and co-infections.

For years he was on Previcid script. The strong stuff. Every day he took it to prevent heartburn/acid reflux.

Then he started taking Marshmallow Root at night, at bedtime. Then the over the counter, weaker dose, of Previcid came out. So, he bought that and gave up the Previcid script.

One day he forgot to take his OTC Previcid. No heartburn. Then he started experimenting and would take one every other day, then every 3 days, then 4. He noticed he wasn't getting heartburn anymore. He hasn't taken Previcid in months. He just takes 2 marshmallow root capsules at bedtime.

I don't know if this would apply to your problem but thought I would pass it along.

It also helped another friend who had acid reflux.

Just putting in my two cents too.

Had a horrible week last week with what started as (I think) a mild stomach bug. I was fine till I ate lunch last Monday, then after eating felt like I would puke the rest of the day. Went on liquids the rest of the day.

Tuesday I had diarrhea all day, so figured, yes it's a bug.

Went on the BRAT diet the rest of last week, till Christmas Eve at supper; I ate what everyone else had--stromboli and pizza. No ill effects at all.

Woke up fine Christmas AM, ate breakfast, no problems, went to niece's for Christmas lunch.

She had a raw veggie tray, so thinking I'd be a good lymie, I ate quite a bit of raw veggies before the main course, turkey corn noodle soup.

While I was eating the soup, I started feeling a little off, but I finished lunch.

Throughout the day, I kept snacking on raw veggies, although I did cheat some and had some fudge. Didn't feel too great the rest of the day.

Day after Christmas, I woke up hungry, so I ate a normal breakfast. No sooner finished than I felt like I would vomit--not necessarily nauseated, but just felt like something was coming up in the back of my throat. It didn't burn like my reflux usually does, but it felt "sludgey" for lack of a better word.

Was sick all day yesterday, ate nothing, just liquids. Till suppertime, when I ate rice. Felt pukey after the rice too, and was down the rest of the night, again feeling there was something in the back of my throat.

This morning I was again hungry. Ate a banana and some tea, felt fine. Had just rice and tea for lunch, and now feel actual burning in the back of my throat.

Wondering now, is this all GERD? I have taken NO abx, supplements or herbs since last Monday; ran out of my probiotic and was just taking a generic one from grocery store. Ran out of Prilosec, which I had been taking on an as-needed basis, so I haven't even had that.

Starting to think I was dying, now I'm wondering if I just need to get my GERD under control again.

I've been on Prilosec for two years due to GERD.
I never really got heartburn or reflux, but chest pain that landed me in the hospital two xmases in a row thinking I was having a heart attack.

All stress tests were negative.

I ran out of Prilosec about a month ago and haven't resumed it.

Since going gluten, wheat, dairy and sugar free I've had very little issues.

Every once in awhile I get a slight burn across my chest (what I refer to as my gastritis pain).

Feels like someone poured rubbing alcohol on an open scrape.

If the pain flares up for a few days I will go back on the Prilosec.
