Yesterday I notice a small pimple type "thing" on my upper lip..used anbesol on it and some chap stick. This morn I woke up with a very swollen lip on the side with about five or more of these "pimples" Going to my moms for her bday and look like a freak. what is this now? Hubby said he thought it was a cold sore startign at first (have no cold thought) but now it is the whole side of my lip. I am so frustrated.

All I am on is oral omnicef and do everything right and I have had a yeast infection last week and now this on top of constant nauseau that comes in waves all the time.

I dream ALL night long and can remember every one of them. All I dream of is my job and going back on the train and to work over an over again. I wake up so upset and confused that I do not know where I am.

I think I am losing my mind now, along with my lip!!!

These are really fairly common and nothing to feel bad about. But, they can be very painful.

Cold sores have nothing to do with a cold. Cold sores are from a virus in the herpes family. Antibiotics have no effect on a virus. However, some supportive herbs such as allicin/garlic, Olive Leaf Extract, etc. may be of help.

Avoid kissing and do not share food - or drinking or eating utensils - during an outbreak or anytime you feel one coming on. You may never have this agiain, or you may have a few repeats.

You should see your doctor for a clear diagnosis.

Chapstick should be avoided as it's petroleum based. A lip balm that is petroleum free is best. One with L-lysine is best.

Find a gentle toothpaste without SLS (sodium laurel sulfate) and without dyes or additives. Avoid teeth whitening products totally.

Monolaurin is effective against the herpes virus. Knowing you have stomach issues I think it will be more gentle on your stomach. L-lysine is also very effective but must be taken on an empty stomach.

In times of stress, it's not uncommon to develop these. Also, your Lyme treatment may be kicking up things that were lying dormant.

PerioBrite tooth paste does not contain sodium laurel sulfate and you can buy both products at vitamin shoppe or order it on line on a variety of sites.

Search the web, and PubMed, for: Curcumin, HSV-1

One finding:

Virology. 2008 Apr 10;373(2):239-47. Epub 2008 Jan 14.

Curcumin inhibits herpes simplex virus immediate-early gene expression by a mechanism independent of p300/CBP histone acetyltransferase activ

Curcumin, a phenolic compound from the curry spice turmeric, exhibits a wide range of activities in eukaryotic cells, including antiviral effects that are at present incompletely character . . . .

. . . These results suggest that curcumin affects VP16-mediated recruitment of RNA polymerase II to IE gene promoters by a mechanism independent of p300/CBP histone acetyltransferase activity.

If you live close to a vitamin shoppe they carry the good brand of Monolaurin and you won't have to wait to receive it in the mail.

I'm glad Abxnomore added the notes about monolaurin as I totally forgot about that and connecting the dots for local procurement. You can probably also find a good topical lip balm at a Vitamin Shoppe or GNC. Just try to avoid petroleum and artificial additives.

In addition to a balm for your lip: CankerMelts link added below - those would be good to place just inside your lip if the sores on on the outside. Especially at night. They come in clear now which is nice for daytime if visible as you talk.

You might search their websites in advance but, sometimes, they carry a bit different inventory at their locations. It's good to call ahead and ask what they have. Then you can search ingredients and make some decisions before you get there.

Your husband should probably also take the same supplements as you.

CankerMelts - for topical relief. You'd still need oral systemic support.
-------------

CankerMelts

- these are wonderful as they adhere to your mouth. Great for bedtime. I've used them as night time cough drops. There is no way to choke on them and they keep a steady stream of low dose licorice which is an antimicrobial help in the mouth.

Gluten-free

Many vitamin stores and pharmacies carry them or you can order on many web sites. In clear or original brown. $16 for 24 patches.

Through VitaCost:

CankerMelts - $7.44 for 18 patches

http://www.herpes-coldsores.com/herpes_supplements.htm

Herpes Supplements

Also see the section on ingredients to avoid: Dicalcium phosphate; Gelatin (Arginine); Magnesium Stearate (if animal derived)

. . . Cold sores should not be confused with canker sores, which are small ulcerations in the mouth. . . .

. . . Application of an ointment containing propolis, the resin collected by bees from trees, has been shown to relieve genital herpes more effectively than topical acyclovir. 18

It is likely that this treatment might also benefit people with cold sores, although this has not been tested. Propolis ointment should be applied four times per day. . . .

As it's a good idea to study anything you consider, some good links (both educational and for shopping) come up from a basic web search of: Propolis

In addition:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez

PubMed Search of Medical Abstracts:

Propolis - 1301 abstracts

Propolis, Antiviral 63 abstracts

Propolis, Herpes 12 abstracts

Propolis, HSV-1 4 abstracts

---------------

This same technique can be used to learn more about other suggestions such as Monolaurin, Lysine, Licorice, Lemon Balm, etc.

One more search to consider: "Foods to avoid" "cold sores"

I hope this gets better soon. Good luck.

Thanks so much for all this info. My mom looked (and they always know) and said it is a cold sore that is formning. A pretty big one on the outside of my lip.Not so pretty.

I am seeing my GP anyway tomorrow to have my BP checked and keep him updated on my treatment. I will pick up the lysine.

FYI-Lysine is great for your animals when they have the sniffles too!Half a lysine smashed in their food twice a day is incredible. This info is from the aspca and north shore animal league.

I never knew about the lip balm issues. WOW. I am a chap stick fanatic so I will look into a better one now and I just started a teeth whiting for the first time this week..wonder if it had anything to do with this?
