Should plant based digestive enzymes be taken before or after you eat?

Can we become dependent on digestive enzymes?
I've been taking for over a month and sometimes wonder about this

I have heard it posited that with betaine that it may actually teach the stomach to start producing more acid on its own, and that you can slowly wean off it.
How this relates to stomach enzymes I do not know.

So what does everyone take. I'm looking into this today actually.
Plant based and why not proteins and carbs together? I'm totally blonde on this one...
Can someone explain this enzyme thing?
How do we know we aren't having the right enzymes....
I was diag. with an esophageal ulcer a few months back and have to take a pill every morning for the acid in my stomach...
I am thinking I want my stomach acid to be normal... can enzymes help with that?
Anyone?

I don't know why on not having proteins and carbs together.
I personally like papaya enzymes and plant based enzymes.
The papaya enzymes have to be chewed and my son and I both use these.
I usually only take the plant based ones after dinner.
The ones that are animal based make me vomit for some reason.
I don't know if people can become dependent on them or not, I know that I have to take them at every meal bc I don't have a gallbladder.
I also have to take them after I eat, I read somewhere to take plant enzymes before you eat, but I only had to do that once to know, it won't work for me that way.

Since, I have learned that no stomach acid is because of a zinc deficiency. (HPU)
We are treating HPU and hoping that the stomach acid starts producing again when we have the zinc deficiency under control.
I am interested in question about the digestive enzymes because I think we need something more in the interim. If they don't do any harm, we may add them.

momintexas... You said you take them because you don't have a gallbladder... I don't have a gallbladder either.
No one ever told me to take enzymes, but I'm thinking I might feel better if I do.
Did you figure this out by yourself to take them as of non gallbladder? or did dr.s or others give you the heads up on taking them?

hadlyme,
They actually told me after my surgery that I would need enzymes.
It was mentioned again when I started seeing a LLMD.
I really think you will feel better if you try them.
I'd stick with plant based or the papaya kind.
