So...I think I've finally proven to myself that my tinnitus is primarily driven by my TMJ.
Before my lyme dx, I was originally looking at TMJ as being my primary issue. I had an injury 16 years ago in college sports. Not bad, but my jaw was slightly off. When I started to crash a year ago (unknowingly from lyme) I went to a chripractor who manually adjusted my jaw (violently.) All hell broke loose after that. Ears started to ring, got dizzy, etc. (I had some ear fullness before had, but that was it.)
Today, things are much better. Jaw feels better most of the time. But I have noticed when my jaw feels worse, my tinnitus is louder. I have also noticed my tinnitus changes pitch when I yawn or open wide or bite down hard. I can also push out the outside of my skull near my jaw joint and the tinnitus changes.
So...this leads me to believe that my tinnitus is primarily TMJ related.
I proved this today during lunch. Before lunch, my jaw felt great and my ears were very quiet. I had cold pizza for lunch that really exercised my jaw. Now, after lunch, my jaw is more stiff and ears are ringing loudly.
The challenge here is to now determine why I have TMJ. Is it because of the Chiro adjustment? Partially, I believe. But I think there is an underlying infection...either lyme or Babs.
I'm thinking Babs as Dr. K says TMJ problems typically equal babesia.
your thoughts?
just wanted those suffering from tinnitus to consider TMJ (caused by lyme & co.)

I believe Dr. K also says the jaw alignment must be fixed? That an improper bite is bad?
I had my TMJ fixed. It was a structural issue and the bugs took advantage of it. I have some bone damage there, so will always have somewhat of a problem with it, but getting my jaw aligned with splint therapy, then getting braces to realign my teeth, helped tons.

- Excellent point. That joint can cause lots of problems when stressed or damaged.
Specific biofeedback for TMJ patients is also helpful to retrain the muscles of the neck, mouth - even how to corrected open and close our mouths. If alignment needs more than re-education, as SGK point out, splints, etc. are very helpful, indeed.
MAGNESIUM often helps TMJ and TMJ related tinnitus and when there is a magnesium deficiency as with lyme - the muscles get very tight and contort - and can cause as much pressure as a semi truck on that little joint.
TMJ is discussed in the EAR thread - and what can help (magnesium, gentle cranial sacral, etc) ----------------
ALL EARS. Specifically for LYME patients - lots of details about ears and what can help:

Naturopathic doctor (ND); Acupuncturist (L. Ac.), a doctor of Oriental Medicine (O.M.D.), or a doctor of Ayurvedic Medicine (D.Ay.), certified herbalists or nutritionists, . . .

Also included are basic links explaining the principles of herbal medicine.
BODY WORK considerations (geared to lyme patients) are discussed; with links. -

I've been wearing a MORA splint from Tufts' TMJ center for almost a year (now only at night.) It has helped a lot.
