Which is better for survival of the bacteria into the intestine -- probiotics that are in capsules or just powders? I am using VSL#3 in both forms, and wondered which was better.

We really know so little about the body and the microbiome.

Not sure.. but at least with the powder, it will somewhat coat the throat and esophagus.

My LLMD said that 90% of the bacteria are killed by stomach acids. He was emphatic that

A) one should only purchase capsules
B) only use the live cultured forms
C) the capsule empties out in just the desired part the intestines where the bacteria can give the most benefit.

Theralac has protection from the stomach acids.

I do know that VSL has had double blind studies done on it. Surely some of the stuff makes it to the intestinal tract!!??

I think I'll continue with my approach of mixing it up with brands and types of probiotics -- from the powder, to the "pods" of BioK, to capsules. Cover all the bases and as many strains as possible, even though we'll never really simulate or replace what's been lost in our gut.

Hi Sunny Days
remember that any good probiotic formula has "prebiotics" too.

These are nutrients that feed and sustain the friendly bacteria, allowing for their multiplication and flourishing in the digestive tract once there.

FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides) and inulin are among these.

I really like (love, actually) the product by New Chaper Organics called Probiotic All-flora is one which I have found to be by far the most effective of any I have tried. That's at least for me, everybody is different. Their biodynamically-grown products are also grown on foods that are bacteria-cultured for bioavailability, and they use very few if any excepients. So they are very, very high quality.

I also found working with the public that people respond very well to their food-grown, biodynamically raised supplements. Don't mind the low dosages, that's because the organics are much better absorbed than the synthetic equivalent, so less is needed. In fact, New Chapter points out quite aptly, that the body doesn't even recognize synthetic "nutrients"---which after all are chemicals---as food. The body recognizes food as food. The bacterially pre-digested ones are easy for the body to uptake and again I found that the public really responded well to their products, if you are interested.
