I have been reading posts on Flagyl because I am about to start it. I have been on Bicillin for 18 months but my immune system is going backwards now so my LLMD switched me to Flagyl and Ketek.
I did make great progress on the Bicillin/Biaxin but it has stopped. My cognitive issues are still very bad and my speech is getting worse again.
He wants to try 3 months of Flagyl/Ketek and then, if that doesn't work, he will install shunt for IV Rocephan...if we can figure out how to afford it.
An aside: he told me that a glass of wine at dinner would be fine. I have been avoiding alcohol but he said a little wine would not hurt me. Any thoughts?
I read about numb hands. I have had those forever. I can only use mouse, cell phone for short time. Will that get even worse???
Headaches: I have had great luck with Fioricef for headaches...hope it continues to work.
I take Dexilant and Florastor for stomach and they work, too, although I am careful with yeast producers (sugar, bread, etc.) because I do get rashes.
Ok, all you Lyme Experts out there....let's hear some of your great ideas for poor old, really OLD, Farraday!!!

I have heard Flagyl and alcohol is a bad combination, resulting in nausea.
I asked my LLMD if I could have a glass of wine on special occasions and she said it would be fine. I try not to do it very often since I am on multiple abx and concerned about the effects on my liver. I would not have a drink if I was taking Flagyl.
I am taking the same dose of Flagyl 4 times this week, and working up to every day. So far, I haven't noticed anything either way. This is only my 3rd week and I started with 2 days the first week.
My daughter is taking Flagyl working up to every day also. She is improving and not herxing badly so far. Her LLMD prescribed it to work on cognitive problems. For the first time in over 3 years, she says her 24/7 headache might be a little better.
So far, I am liking Flagyl. I hope it works for you.

I've been using Flagyl on and off without issue. I know the LymeMD says in his blogs that Flagyl is useful and that 250-500 mgs per day is sufficient.
However, people generally use more. It's just good to run blood work regularly to make sure nothing kooky is going on with the liver.

Forget Flagyl and alcohol. Flagyl is very similiar to a a drug given to alcoholics, antabuse, which combined with alcohol will make you throw up. Not to mention Ketek is one of the hardest oral abx on the liver so I'm surprised he even mentioned a glass of wine in the evening when taking Flagyl and Ketek. Then again I'm not a doctor and he is so just giving you my 2 cents.

From page 15 of Dr. Burrascano's Guidelines, topic "Flagyl" (metrondazole):
"Important precautions:
1. Pregnancy while on Flagyl is not advised, as there is a risk of birth defects.
2. No alcohol consumption! A severe, "Antabuse" reaction will occur, consisting of severe nausea, flushing, headache, and other symptoms.
3. Yeast overgrowth is especially common. A strict anti-yeast regimen must be followed.
4. Flagyl can be irritative to the nervous system- in the short term, it may cause irritability, "spacey" feelings, etc. Longer term, it can affect the peripheral nerves, causing tingles, numbness, etc. If mild, a change in dose may be required. Often, extra vitamin B can clear these symptoms. If the nerve symptoms persist or are strong, then metronidazole must be discontinued or these symptoms may become very long lasting.
5. Strong Herxheimer-like reactions are seen in almost everyone."
No way would I drink any alcohol or deviate from the anti-yeast diet while taking flagyl.

Ketek has been known to cause liver failure and you should be closely monitoring your liver enzymes if you are taking it. At least bi-weekly labs..
Flagyl was great for my daughter, but she was told no alcohol, not to even use hand sanitizer.. She was also told no more than 2 months, then switch to tindamax..

my doc would not give me flagyl with Zithromax and Omnicef. I have some old flagyl here and am so tempted to try it cuz Zith and Omnicef has not seemed to do a thing yet. I don't want to break her trust, but jeez, she won't even go over test results until march appointment. Do ya think trying Flagyl just to see could do any damage along with the Zith and the Omnicef? I know I should be patient but being so debilitated and stuck here alone, it's hard to just keep waiting and do nothing.

Beagle, when my daughter started flagyl she was already on biaxin and ceftin, which are from the same abx groups that you are taking. I don't see the harm in taking them together, it's just up to you if you want to attempt self medicating.
We did it and were successful...others may not agree.

I am taking Flagyl w/ Rifampin and Doxy. I won't mention the dosage but when I took just part of the dose for a couple of days I was fine, but when I added the 2nd dose I felt totally spaced out that night for an hour or two and it lingered a bit until the next day. I still haven't put the 3rd and last dose in but feel fine on the 2. I have not had herxes on it. I would agree to absolutely not drink on this drug. I have not had alcohol since taking any of these antibiotics. I don't want to know how it will feel to have a side effect from mixing alcohol w/ these potent antibiotics. Just focusing on being healthy! Good luck to you.

Wow!!! Hit by truck. No survivors. Started Flagyl Feb.11. Speech gone south, energy went with it. Mad as hell. Guess it works.

I hear ya. I started pulsing Flagyl 3 days a week (started last week)... definitely got that hit by a truck feeling.
Some of my neuro symptoms that I haven't experienced in about 5 years popped up within the first 12 hours. Seems to be doing something, that's for sure!
