From page 13 of Burrascano:

"When present in a hostile environment, such as ... serum [blood] with certain antibiotics added, Bb can change from the spiral form (spirochete) into a cyst form. This cyst seems to be able to remain dormant, but when placed into an environment more favorable to its growth, Bb can revert into the spirochete form. The antibiotics commonly used for Lyme do not kill the cystic form of Bb. However, there is laboratory evidence that metronidazole and tinidazole will disrupt it. Therefore, the chronically infected patient who has resistant disease may need to have metronidazole (or tinidazole) added to the regimen."

When you treat lyme disease with a medication that kills it in its regular (spiral shaped) form, the lyme will go into a cyst form (ball shape) that the medication cannot attack. That's how it keeps from getting killed.

There is no cyst that forms in your body. We are talking about microscopic bacteria here (the lyme bacteria) taking on a different shape--from spiral to ball-shaped.

After a month of treating lyme with a good medication, it is most likely that some of the lyme has succeeded in not being killed by turning into the cyst form.

So, eventually, the doc will have to disrupt these cysts with flagyl (metronidazole) or another medication that is known to break open the cyst form of lyme.

Bb is borrelia burgdorferi, the spirochete that causes Lyme, and yes, it forms cysts unless a cyst-buster is there to prevent ir from doing so.
