I noticed the herbal tinctures I take seem to have a decent percentage of alcohol. Is that OK?
Has me worried.

If your liver enzymes are okay and you're not taking a med like Flagyl, it should be alright. Otherwise, what we did was add the tincture to a little water and heat it but not boil... Just to let off some of the alchohol.

So I could add to water and then maybe heat in the microwave for a bit or better on the stove?

So just get it off just before boil? Thanks.
How much alcohol does this cook off?

Richedie, I think Ill find this very interesting!
So does this mean I should skip the herbal tinctures? All the ones I have tried...all have alcohol.

Do the Cowden protocl herbs have alcohol? Why would they do that!

For the Pekana detox kit, we were handed an instruction sheet from the LLMD and it said that you can actually bring the drops to a boil in water and then let stand till cool.
Good question about the Cowden herbs, not sure if they do... I do know that the Healthy Directions (now called Beyond Balance) formulas have a glycerine base.
Why is there alcohol in tinctures?
Alcohol extracts a greater amount of medicinal properties than just water or glycerine. Many herbs are very resinous which makes them not water soluble and are only able to extract into alcohol. Plus the alcohol keeps the product good and potent for 5-10 years.
I don't like to ingest alcohol, is there a way to get rid of it?
The alcohol in a tincture can be evaporated out by adding the drops to almost boiling water and swirling until cool.

In the small amount that we take these tinctures, I think the alcohol content is of little/no significance. I don't worry about it.

I am of the same camp as Tammy...my tinctures have alcohol, and though I cannot drink AT ALL, taking the tinctures has never bothered me. I would say see how you feel...unless you are having liver issues...not sure how much would bother you though.
Some companies do make alcohol free tinctures, especially smaller companies.

It could bother you because the body sees it as sugar and Dr. B says absolutely no alcohol.
What are the Beyond Balance formulas? Never heard of those.
I read in a study that boiling does not get rid of the alcohol very fast. In fact the study showed it took 3 hours to get rid of the alcohol!

It's also relevant when you are taking multiple tinctures 2 or 3 times a day. The alcohol content adds up. If you are on something like Metronidazole that can cause you to be very sick.
Beyond Balance was known as Healthy Directions. They are the Bab-1, Bab-2, Bar-1, and Lyme formulas...
