The articles below indicate that hydroxychloroquine aka plaquenil can interfere with the conversion of Vitamin D and can result in lower calcium levels....
Could the pain that some experience on plaquenil be to a decreased utilization of calcium and Vitamin D??? I'm on my 6th week of plaquenil and I'm having deep aching in my hips, thighs, and feet....very similar to Vitamin D deficiency symptoms...

If that happened to me, I would not take it. I had trouble with stomach pain from plaquenil. I lasted a few days.

That happened to me and my doc had me stop taking it.
I had severe pain in my face, teeth, jaw, ears, etc. He didn't say why it caused it, but it was very obvious that it was the plaquenil. It was the only thing I had started on at that time.

Thanks for your responses...I know that many experience pain initially while on plaquenil and these are usually listed as "side effects"...I had headaches and stomach issues on it the first three weeks. I read from many that I should stay on it as those will go away. Thankfully they did. However, into my 6th week this kicked-up, inflamed feeling in my legs I think might be due to some vitamin D conversion/calcium aborption issue.....
I'm going to start my Vitamin D again and see how it goes....

I am on my 9th year of plaquenil with no problems. I did have skin problems with the generic though.I started out with 800 mgs for what I was told was lupus. Now I am down to 400. I get my eyes checked and have no problems there. I know everyone is different. Best of luck.
