I think lyme can trigger mental disorders that may need to be treated separatly. It happened to me.
I developed a mood disorder because of lyme and I had to treat the mood disorder as well as the lyme.
Your doctor should know that lyme can trigger these types of issues.

I think not all doctors understand what depersonalization is. I know exactly the feeling you are referring to. I have it all the time. My doctor continues to refer to it as brain fog.

I went to a "lyme doc" whose center had the word "lyme disease" in it. I complained , among other things, of depersonalization and periodic losses of reality. He gave me a look like I had 2 heads. - "I've never heard of that" - the guy turned out to be a real jerk, and knew nothing about Lyme. this was early on in treatment. Since then I have gone through quite a few docs. I recommend getting another doc.

When a doctor says something ignorant or stupid he loses credibility. You just keep moving on until you find the one you trust WITH YOUR LIFE.

Nichole, your doctor probably hasn't heard of a lot of things about Lyme. In-fact many LLMD's haven't even heard a lot of things. They're learning everyday.
Depersonalization is one of those symptoms that only is well understood by Lyme Specialists who are also Psychiatrist or Neurologists.
For example, read Dr. B's work: Lyme Disease And Cognitive Impairment:
Dr. B is the "PRESIDENT" of the International Lyme And Associated Disease Society, so he knows a little bit about what he's talking about. Notice he mentions that these areas are affected in Chronic Lyme Disease. Not every patient experiences every single symptom in exactly the same way, but generally speaking, Depersonalization is common:
Notice under the section on Imagery he writes:
Imagery
Imagery is a uniquely human trait. It is the ability to create what never was within our minds. When functioning properly, it is a component of human creativity, but when impaired, it can result in psychosis. Imagery functions that can be affected by LE include:
Capacity for visual imagery: The ability to picture something, such as a map, in our head.
Intrusive images: Images that suddenly appear which may be aggressive, horrific, sexual or otherwise.
Hypnagogic hallucinations: The continuation of a dream, even after being fully awake.
Vivid nightmares: A tendency towards nightmares of a vivid Technicolor nature.
Illusions: Auditory, visual, tactile and/or olfactory perceptions which are distorted or misperceived.
Hallucinations: Hearing, seeing, feeling and/or smelling something that is not present. In LE, sometimes this takes the form of hearing music or a radio station in the background. Unlike schizophrenic hallucinations, these are accompanied by a clear sensorium, and the patient is aware hallucinations are present.
Depersonalization: A loss of a sense of physical existence.
Derealization: A loss of a sense that the environment is real.
