As some of you know, I have been searching for something to help my teenage son's acne.
We have been to the dermatologist and got doxy (which I refuse to let him take, esp. open-ended as they prescribe it), retin A, and benzoil peroxide.
Not much change at all using the topicals.
I found a little zit-zapper called the Zeno, which you can use on the under-the-skin zits before they fully form; it was pretty effective at those trouble spots, but not all over.
So, I was researching again the other day and ran across a thread somewhere about the effectiveness of the spice tumeric. I happened to have some in the house so gave him a 400mg capsule once a day for the past four days.
I would say he looks 50% better already. I am amazed at the results so far and hope we have finally found something that works.
He also dots Hibaclens on trouble spots and leaves it for about 2 min. before he showers. It is supposed to kill staph, which a ND found through EDS was part of what was causing his acne.
I hope someone out there might be helped by our experience.
Take care everyone.

Acne is caused by a bacterial infection, thus why they prescribe Doxy for it.
Interesting about the turmeric. Glad it is working for him.

Yes, I know the doxy is effective, he just doesn't do well on abx. No one in our family can tolerate them, so we have had to find alternatives for lyme tx as well.
Also, is it worth him becoming a walking fungus in order to clear up his acne?
Nice to know there are other things that work.

This is good to know. My teenager suffers the same and it has come back as staph as well. Doxy did help when she was on lyme tx but she has decided not to treat with abx any longer.
Will try the turmeric. It's awesome stuff for so many things! I never thought of it helping with cystic acne.

Acne is not caused by a bacterial infection; every case is different, but the bacterial overgrowth in and around the cysts and comedomes is likely just due to impaired immune function due to the tension in the tissue in the immediate area. Doxy likely works just as much for its anti-inflammatory activity as its antibacterial property. That would be consistent with the beneficial effects of turmeric, which contains curcumin, a potent anti-inflammatory. Contrary to the modern medical establishment's assertion that diet has no effect on acne, removal of processed food, bleached flour, conventional milk, and high fructose corn syrup can go a long way to relieving the condition.

Dr Luddite,
When we saw the dermatologist, one of the first things he said was, 'we're not going to put you on a special diet'. I thought to myself, diet affects everything.
We know sugar really affects his blood sugar as well as his skin. When we travel and are 'off our feed', he always flares up.
I also saw that tumeric is also effective against c-diff. The article I read said the incidence of c-diff in India is much lower. They use it in many of their foods.
Icky and Jane,
I hope it helps!

I know diet used to affect mine big time. Low-dose Amoxy is good for acne if you can tolerate it.
Clindamycin phosphate foam (topical) works pretty well too...

The pharmacist told me about the clindamycin. But you have to be really careful with it, even the topical is a major contributor to c-diff infections.
If you are using it, be sure to take probiotics such and Florastor and Theralac to replace the good bacteria that the abx kills.
I turned up with c-diff recently. I had no sx. but am a carrier. It's not from abx, which is the usual cause of c-diff, but probably from much time spent in an assisted living and the hospital with an elderly aunt.
Hospitals and long-term care facilities are infested with it.

There are two protocols I would recommend trying if you haven't found a solution yet:
the acne.org benzoyl peroxide + cleanser + moisturizer regimen. (which uses fairly generic products, but they sell a big bottle of benzoyl peroxide for cheap.)
acnescript.com - a pill containing turmeric, garlic, vitamins, and some more stuff. they sell it pretty cheap (I realize the website looks tacky) but I tried it and it seemed to work pretty well.

5v,
Not sure what type of acne it is. It's moderate and does not respond to benzoil peroxide at all.
So I think the second product you mentioned which contains the tumeric plus other stuff would be something we might try.
Since the tumeric by itself is working, maybe the added stuff will help that much more. He is not cleared up, but improved. So we will check out the site you mentioned.
Thanks!

Check an oral temperature 2-3 times daily, if lower than 98.6 consistently consider wilson's temperature syndrome. If body temp is lower than 98.6 consistently, skin will be even cooler, and skin oils more viscous and therefore likely to clog pores. Not a very complicated explanation but sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one, but you never know, every case is different.
