I have been getting 3 a week since July 2010. I had pain the first few weeks. After that they were not pleasant but not unbearable.
Did your doc prescribe a numbing cream? Also applying heat to the area for 10-15 min after helps. And lastly walking a bit also helped me.
Its hard to say since I am on many different meds but I am doing better and feel the bicillin was a big part of it.

Bicillin was very effective for me..
3x week too.
Wife did it.
I also had to stop after about six months due to extremely painful insertion areas, but do feel it was a big part of remission for me at the time.
Overall, IMO, it's a very effective cell wall inhibitor and does it's job best when paired w/ a protein synthesis inhibitor such as biaxin and an intracellular drug such as Rifampin.
Best.

I have been getting 2 shots once a week since January. For six weeks I took it with Rifampin and Biaxin and now I'm just on bicillin and biaxin.
I go to the doctor's office for my shots and I have had no pain, no swelling or anything and it doesn't even hurt as the needle is going in!
Since starting the bicilin, I have felt 100x better!! My one remaining symptom, which I fear will never go away, is the wooziness in my head when I'm walking.

Wonder if it is dosage. 2.4 million units once a week instead of 1.2 million units twice a week. That is a lot of stuff to put in the tissue.

I did 3 1.2MU shots per week for 6 months. My wife stuck me. But I had to do a few myself.
I'll tell you, sometimes they hurt like crazy, sometimes they didn't. I tried the numbing cream but that just helps with the insertion pain. If you hit it hard and fast the insertion doesn't hurt at all. It's the medicine going in that hurts. The slower the better.
It's been 4 months since I had my last one and there is a part of my butt that still hurts.
I'd do it again in a heart beat if I had to. I think it really helped me.
The only side effect I noticed from it was fatigue/sleepyness. But I always had them done right before going to bed.

My LLMD has me on 1.2 million units per shot, two shots (one in each bum) once every week. I've been doing this for going on the third month. This is in combination with IV zithro and IV flagyl.
I tried the 2.4 mil. units for an entire month and I couldn't even pull my pants up over my bottom without wincing in pain. The shots would leave huge nodules under my skin that hurt with every move. Now I'm on the 1.2 mil shots, but do two of them and its much easier to tolerate.
You can pre-medicate with ibuprofen and ice to the site then follow with heat to aid in dispersing the med. And have your son really try not to squeeze his glutes during the injection.
If its still too painful, ask the doc if you can give it to him in his thigh instead. I tolerate IM injections much better in the thigh rather than in the butt.

Hubby gives me 2/week and I ice the area for an hour before. He pushes bicillin in fast and I never really even notice. 6 months at least. Not taking anything else right now due to recent extreme herxing. Should I take zith?
