Outdoor supply stores like Bass Pro and Gander Mountain usually stock it. Typical brand name= "Permanone". You could probably find it at various online sites as well.
You only apply it to your clothes- no skin contact- and then let them dry, so I assume it'd be OK for kids. Best to read the manufacturer's instructions I guess.
Edited to add: permethrin is not a "repellent", but rather a "kill-on-contact" insecticide originally derived from chrysanthemums. The only thing I know of that actually KILLS the buggers. Highly recommend it.

be careful with kids. read lable but i suggest research more than that.
i agree it is the only one that works. one study said the ticks curled up and died a few inches before they got to it...so it is very strong.
but it might cause neuro damage. you need to be very careful. it is possible if you mix it with deet it is much less safe
i decided years ago to use it on my dogs because whenever i didn't there were ticks on all of us and in the house
but i would be very careful with children
