Is a Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection recognized as a co-infection with Lyme? or maybe the better question is do any and all of the Mycoplasma bacteria qualify as a co-infection of Lyme?

Our LLMD tested for it. My son is a weak positive... I believe it is significant. Testing is much too stringent. Any positive is positive in my eyes.

I tested for this 7 times and all were +
I cant get rid of it through antibiotics, I herx way to hard. Now Im trying to exercise it away.

In the Burrascano Guidelines, they are referred to as coinfections or concurrent infections. Here are a few quotes:
"CO-INFECTION A huge body of research and clinical experience has demonstrated the nearly universal phenomenon in chronic Lyme patients of co-infection with multiple tick-borne pathogens. These patients have been shown to potentially carry Babesia species, Bartonella-like organisms, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, Mycoplasma, and viruses." (page 4)
"CHRONIC LYME DISEASE (PERSISTENT/RECURRENT INFECTION) By definition, this category consists of patients with active infection, of a more prolonged duration, who are more likely have higher spirochete loads, weaker defense mechanisms, possibly more virulent or resistant strains, and probably are significantly co-infected. Neurotoxins may also be significant in these patients. Search for and treat for all of these, and search for concurrent infections including viruses, chlamydias, and mycoplasmas." (page 20)
So, Burrascano is telling lyme docs to search for mycoplasmas and treat them. He talks a little about how to test for them also. See page 5 for that info.

It might be helpful to check out cpnhelp.org. They talk about how these mycoplasma infections have three life cycles, and unless you treat for each cycle, it just keeps reinfecting.

I'm trying to piece together my history for the next doctor I see. I had a positive Mycoplasma pneumoniae PCR throat swab done on me about 18 months ago at a walk-in-clinic that I frequented for various complaints.
They would invariably give me a steroid shot and antibiotic and send me on my way, and it seemed the steroid shot would always give me a little boost and somewhat bring down the constant and continual swelling that I have in my throat which makes it difficult to swallow.
I did not realize at the time this could be a co-infection of Lyme and thought nothing of it and since then have had a Western Blot with an IgG p41 band present. Coincidental? I will be curious to see what the new doc finds on the labs that he orders.

My son has mycoplasma pneumonia and I'm always trying to find out more information about it. He also originally started out with only Band 41. Once we began treating the myco p, he has had major improvement. (praying it continues, fingers crossed, knocking on wood......)
Sapi, an assistant professor of biology and environmental science at the University of New Haven, and several graduate students recently presented research demonstrating that over 84 percent of the ticks they tested were infected by Mycoplasma pathogens, bacteria which can wreak havoc reminiscent of the Borrelia bacterium responsible for Lyme disease. "Doctors are starting to realize that some of the patients who exhibit symptoms of Lyme disease but don't respond to treatment may be infected with a Mycoplasma pathogen," Sapi says. "We now have evidence of the presence of human pathogenic Mycoplasma species in deer ticks.

Ohhh... thanks momintexas! That is very encouraging to hear. I do hope he continues to progress. How long has he been on treatment for the Mycoplasma and what are they treating with? Are they are also treating for Lyme?
I am finding myself getting hopeful.

I have both bart and myco, neither of which I got at the same time as Lyme disease, but do they still count as co-infections?
I don't really think it matters, really. If you're asking whether or not mycoplasma can come from ticks, the answer is yes. But ticks can carry everything from Lyme disease to parasites to viruses, so who's to say what's a coinfection and what isn't!
AND I CONCUR, I've been curious about the relationship between Lyme and Mycoplasma and I, too, am finding out they REALLY ARE indistinguishable!
Now please keep in mind I only had band 41 positive with a regualr Western Blot; you won't know what's really there until you get an IGeneX test. You can see from my signature what popped up when I had that done.

I recall reading that there may have been patents mixing Lyme with mycoplasma and brucellosis, but I don't know the cite. Wondering if anyone does.
