Thanks to all of you for coming to my pity party-we had fun, didn't we? Next time, let's not bring the garlic and onion dip- it did a number on my tummy!! On to the next item- I am suffocating- very much short of breath. The doc stopped the Malarone and Zithro for 3 days- but restarted it only to have the symptom return. I don't tolerate ABX very well so I want to try and stick it out- any over the counter/natural thing I could buy- besides brown paper bags!

I learned to duplicate the brown paper bag with my breathing .... Breath in slowly, hold for 5 seconds or so ... breath out slowly ... wait another 5 seconds to breath in again.
For me air hunger was hyperventilating ... in fact at times it got so bad I did hyperventilate.
Be sure to focus on breathing OUT completely and holding with no breath.

Another trick that our MD told me was to mix some baking soda in water and drink. Alkylosis can cause the air hunger. I don't know if it really helps me or if I just *think* it does. ;-) For me - half the battle with air hunger is the mental game, yk? Once a spell begins, I have to win the mental battle to conquer it before I can conquer it phyically. Make sense? I use the trick goofy talks about, relax, and talk myself through until its over.
Lots of luck with the abx!

Diggin up this old post because this is how I've been feeling.
I started Ceftin and Malarone I guess 2 months ago. I had been in a pattern of air hunger that would flare up every 5-7 days, but for the past week now it has been almost cconstant.
I had 2 days of nausea that felt like a cross between a stomach bug and acid reflux--no vomiting or diarrhea, just felt awful. Of course, as SOON as the nausea let up, the air hunger came back.
It has been just terrible, feeling like there's a tight band around my chest, and sometimes thinking I'm going to pass out or drop dead if it doesn't let up.
Also, usually it lets up when I lie down, and it doesn't interfere with my sleeping, but there are nights now when I feel like I'm struggling to breathe as I'm falling asleep.
Just so sick of the whole thing, I guess.

Herbal product has really helped me and a family member with asthma, a lot:
GAIA Herbs Respiratory Defense (this is more anti-viral et al but contains herbs that support relaxation responses in the bronchial airways, to aid their dilating).
Or use GAIA Herbs Breathe Naturally (when working at healthfood stores people also did well with this)
OR HerbPharm Calm Breath (ditto)
All contain herbs that support the relaxation and dilating of bronchial airways. Made with grindelia, the herb from which asthma medication was once made.
Breathe Naturally contains some green tea so if you are concerned about the caffeine, especially in over-stimulated lyme neuro conditions, try the next formula.
Echinacea in the formula on top (Respiratory Defense)is best taken ten days at a time, then take a 2 week break before starting again.
No particular warnings about the Calm Breath product *that I know of*!
You can also steam with chamomile tea, it' s anti-inflammatory and gentle. Make a pot of tea. SHould be hot but not hot enough for the steam to burn your face. Set the hot tea on a trivet on a table. Throw a towel over your face/the pot to form a tent which catches the steam. Breathe in through your nose if that's possible (deeper breathing this way) or through your mouth. Do this for 5-10 minutes or until steam stops. Rinse off with very cold water to close your pores. Pat dry gently, do not rub your now-delicate skin. Can be done several times per day. This does not open airways but does have anti-inflammatory support for the airways.

Well, yesterday I drank the tea and my air hunger seemed to lessen. I also took Arteminisin around the same time so I wasn't sure which actually helped. So today I drank the tea without Art. and I think it helped a little. Can't say its a miracle yet but I also haven't been drinking it every hour like it says to. There are reviews on iherb.com.
