I know that petachia can be from either bartonella or babesia.

Also it is not that unusual for people to get a rash from mepron.

Just curious as to how many people have gotten some sort of rash during babesia treatment and if they thought it was from a specific drug did they think it was an actual allergy or some sort of die off symptom.

Also would be helpful if you could describe your rash.

I increased hubby's malarone from 3 or 4 pills daily (has been on that dose for a couple of months now) to total of 6 pills daily.

He has been in and out of the hospital 3 times in the last 6 weeks and the skin on his hands is peeling off because of all the IV's that infiltrated. And now his thighs, calves and lower back seem to be turning red. Not at all sure what is going on at this point. These are not hives. It is more like spider veins or broken capillaries. Skin does not itch.

Calling a doc is not possible right now -- will find out hopefully early next week if we have a new LLMD and if the PCP is still on board.

I have never had a rash with Mepron or Malarone, or any Babesia treatment, for that matter.

Bartonella treatment makes me crazy rashy. Usually the broken capillary rashes. But also skin-colored moles and skin tags.

I have some cherry angiomas. I'm not sure which infection increases their numbers. I've heard they can be related to Bart, Babs and Chlamydia Pneumoniae.

It's interesting that the rashes are concentrated in the lower body. All of my Bart rashes of the capillary variety are on the low body. And they all came out after extensive Babs treatment.

I have had this broken blood vessel looking rash all over my abdomen several times. It's not from the medication, it is from babesia itself. It is very strange looking. Like a petechia rash as you said.

I am pretty much symptom free these days. Occasionally I will get this on my collarbone area and it doesn't last long.

I have also had flushing on my lower neck and chest. The last few times it occurred the skin that was flushed then felt really dry and it peeled off.

I have also had red hands and thighs with babesia. So it sounds like he needs to keep up with the treatment.

It sounds like he and you have had a very rough 6 weeks. Hang in there. I bet the increased malarone dose will help him out.

I am in my tenth month of chinese herbs for treatment of babesia and a couple of weeks ago I developed an expanding rash on my abdomen, which was the original site of my EM many years ago. It seems to be "a lesser" version of that rash.

I don't know if it is die off or a reactivation of the diseases, but I have been feeling better, rather than worse, so I hope that it is die off.

I have been treating babesia with mepron and clindamyacin for about a month. What has erupted on me are tiny scratch like marks just beneath the skin. It looks as if I was scratched by a kitten or a puppy.

they are short, about the size of a staple.

I was speaking to another lymie on FB who posted this same phenomenon...our photos look exactly alike. Her 'rash' appeared while treating babesia as well, though she was on Mepron.

So, like BoxerMom, this rash has appeared during or after BABESIA tx. Though it is classic BART scratch.

Maybe the theory is true, knock down one, and the other pops up? or maybe Bart is somehow effected by babesia meds??

My sking flushes constantly on babs tx. but goes away after abt. an hour.....so how is that for a confusing answer, Bea?

I hope that things settle down for the both of you!

So sorry you and hubby are having a rough go of it...

I had a rash once when treating babesia, and it was with a giant herx from clindamycin quinine. (Clindamycin alone, no problem, add quinine and herx, herx, herx)

The rash was on my legs and it consisted of small, red, flat spots. They itched a little initially, and lasted about a week to ten days, even after stopping treatment. Mine did not look like broken capillaries.

My llmd thought it was a herx reaction.
