It has been a very long time since I have posted. Good news, after 2 years of abx I was 100% better for 2 years. Bad news, it is back and I have been on treatment for 2 months.

My question is can dental work cause a flare-up? Four days ago I had a tooth filled w/ a non-metal filling. I had been feeling pretty good up to that point, now I am not doing so well. Major jaw pain, stiff warm neck, joint pains and extreme fatique. Any suggestions on how to break this herx/flare-up. I have been soaking in Episom salts.

Thanks a bunch!

Dental work can cause bacteria to enter the blood stream, causing various infections in various parts of the body. So, it is possible that, with an impaired immune system caused by lyme, that this could have happened to you and so you are not feeling so well right now.

If a dentist performs dental work on a patient with infection in his mouth, the infection can enter the blood stream and go to the brain and infect the brain causing encephalitis. That's why dentists won't pull teeth if there is infection at the site. They put you on antibiotics first. Then, pull later.

My brother-in-law did not take enough antibiotics evidently before having his teeth pulled. He got encephalitis, bled in his brain, and is now permanently brain damaged. He was 10 years back in time when he finally came to his senses. So, we will never know exactly what he did wrong before his dental appointment.

Dental work can also trigger infection in the heart of persons with certain heart conditions, or a urinary tract infection, etc.

So, you can see how dental work could make a lymie sick.

Here is a short quote from WebMd about how it happens:

"Bacteria found in tooth plaque may multiply and cause gingivitis (gum disease). If not treated, this may become advanced. The gums become inflamed (red and swollen) and often bleed during tooth brushing, flossing, or certain dental procedures involving manipulation of the gums. When gums bleed, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and can infect other parts of the body."

So, you may want to call your lyme doc and tell him what has happened. He may want to increase your dose temporarily or add another med temporarily, etc.

As you can see, I am tending to think it is not a herx or flare, but rather the result of stirring up of bacteria in your mouth and possible entry into your blood stream and the inability of your immune system to deal with it.
