Hubby's new consulting LLMD is unable to prescribe IV antibiotics due to medical board restrictions.

LLMD has suggested that we try to obtain IV clindamycin without a scrip from a veterinary supply company.

Has anyone had success with this approach?

The LLMD feels that oral clindamycin would be too upsetting to the G.I. at the suggested doses of 600 mg 3 times per day (standard IDSA doses).

Hubby definitely herxes on the IV clindamycin if there are enough other babesia meds in the combo. I will post another thread updating on his current treatment protocol.

Use the email below if desired.

Thanks.

It looks like Clindamycin drops are readily available under the generic name of Antirobe. The med is described as an oral antibiotic, but per discussion with LLMD since the preservative used is ethyl alcohol it should be ok to dilute the med with D5W and use as an IV drip just like the regular vials of IV clindamycin.

But of course it is more expensive since no insurance is involved, but at least it is available.

I haven't had a chance to do a price comparison yet to find the best price.

I read about people getting anti-parasite drugs from vet supply stores. It's alot cheaper!

I haven't tried it but I would if it became necessary.

If the drops were intended to be used orally or topically I would not use them in an IV. I would be concerned about the medication's purity, particle size, and ph....

It might be safer to purchase the injectable meds from an overseas pharmacy.

hey Bea, I'd like to knwo how he does on the IV Clina protocol. Will he pulse, take a week off here and there? I wanted my doc to up my dose to 1200 a day but he only does 600.

Has your hubby done 600 3 X a day already? If so, how long did he do that for?

Haley,

Hubby has been on IV clindamycin continuously since February 4. He has done either 1, 2 or 3 IV's daily except for a couple of days during one hospitalization. He has done 3 IV's daily on all the days he was on quinine and either 1 or 2 times daily on the off cycles.

Plan is to do one more 10 day cycle of quinine and then switch out the quinine for larium. Will also switch the malarone to artemisinin. Will continue on the IV clindamycin and factive and minocycline. Current plan is to stay on this protocol for another 2 months and then probably switch to some sort of protocol using primaquine and chloroquine.

Will have done 6 rounds of quinine in total -- 10 days, 10 days, 9 days, 21 days, 10 days and 11 days.

Hubby seems to have settled into a pattern. On the off cycles when he is not on quinine he is afebrile (no fevers) although he still has some sweats.

When he goes back on quinine after a couple of days he starts running low grade fevers of 99.5 up to 100.5 He takes 2 tylenol (1000 mg) to make sure the fever does not go above 101. He has had no chills during the last 10 day cycle -- just fevers.

His temp starts at about 97.6 or so in the morning and then goes up with the first dose of quinine and malarone. Then it goes back down for a few hours and goes up again with each additional dose of meds.

His highest temp is at night before he does the last dose of IV clindamycin and that is when he takes the tylenol. The LLMD made an interesting comment that makes sense to us -- they said that during the day the body produces more cortisol naturally and that is why the fever spikes at night. Cortisol production is lower then and cortisol acts as an anti-inflammatory.

Discussed this with his LLMD consultant -- their opinion is that the combo of meds is killing off the babesia and that is causing the fevers. His WBC has been normal now for the last 2 or 3 weeks. Also when he started the last rotation of quinine he had another die off of red blood cells. His RBC and hematocrit and hemoglobin went down and so did his platelets.

Sammy -- Looks like we may have to look overseas anyway -- when reading the fine print it seems like clindamycin as caps or oral drops requires a prescription from the vet supply sources I have checked. What I was looking at were pharmaceutical meds and I do think it would work as an IV if it was available.

Thanks for all the information Bea. I'll send you a PM, more about this.

The biggest side effect for me of the Clinda is EXTREME fatigue.

Can hardly write this email.

Sorry, I don't have much info on your original question.

People on morgellons sites know this best as they always have to order vet supplies. Some of them also have horses and they really know what is ok and not.
