Red yeast rice helped me lower my cholesterol without the nasty drugs the doctors are handing out.

You can take it along with the rest of the supplements you are taking.

Ask your doctor to explain why he wants you to take Zetia, when there is 0% proof it reduces one's risk of heart disease?

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0815/is_10_33/ai_n31116527/

There was that whole thing about Merck hiding the data on Zetia a while back.

Better options, if you have to go the medicine route, would be Niaspan or red yeast rice + CoQ10. And that is an awful lot of Vitamin E and fish oil (if that is straight omega 3 content) you are taking there, by the way.

i tried red yeast it didn't work

the fish oil and vet e are what i was told are the dose to take for pain and lipids...does someone else think this is high? it sure is expensive-but i was able to only take 1/2 my ibuprofen when i take the fish oil

i don't know what niaspan is..i will check

doc offered me the prescription made of fish oil but i said id been doing fish oil for many years so he switched me to zetia

my brother has been on it for 15 yrs

my son also had trouble with lipitor like me

my main problem is the musc damage and can i fix it

i do a lot of coq10

How much RYR did you take, kayak?? How many mg??
--and for how many days, weeks--?
I take 4000 omega 3's .. and 1000 Vit E myself.

Niaspan is big pharma's way to make $$$ off of a time released niacin. Go buy some niacin.

Slo-Niacin or Enduracin should work just about as well as Niaspan does, but everyone is different. So if you take niacin, just go with whatever works. Immediate release niacin is probably best as far as lipids go, but most people have a problem with the flush.

For red yeast rice, there are various brands, so make sure you were taking a decent one (one's listed by Consumer Labs are probably good) -- Healthy origins, Nature's Plus, etc.

Niaspan (or niacin) shouldn't have any negative muscle issues, so perhaps that'd be best for you.

As for doses... several grams of omega 3s may suppress the immune system. So that's great if you have an autoimmune disease, but maybe not so great for Lyme people. If you are taking 6g of fish oil, but only at a 300mg Omega 3 content, then it's really 1.8g, which isn't so bad.

And a meta-analysis of vitamin E (alpha only) showed an increase in mortality rates once you get around 400IU or so... less than 50IU showed some benefit, 100IU was neutral... greater than that was a problem. At least make sure you are taking a mixed E product, with gamma, not alpha only.

What is your vitamin D status? Zetia will prevent absorption of fat soluble things in your diet, likely lower your vitamin D level.

And cholesterol is also important for the immune system. Your body can't make white blood cells and other key components involved in the immune system without sufficient cholesterol.

If a person has high cholesterol, it is likely due to a liver issue (which is where cholesterol is made in the body from the foods we eat).

how would i know if there is a liver problem?

my vit d was low but i supplemented and it stays high now...i take one if i can't get sun
