I'm not sure what to do. I can't seem to shake my fever I've had for 4 days now. It goes down a bit with pain relief meds, but comes back repeatedly. Last night, I was drenched in sweat and sticky. Fever jumped to 102.8 again. Biaxin isn't helping.

This is weird. I saw my PCP today. He didn't do any additional tests of course. i got back a few of the blood tests my ID doc ordered two days ago, but some aren't in yet. Specifically, the Mycoplasma Pneumonia ones, Cold Agglutinins, etc.

I thought for sure my CBC would be off. Amazingly, it was normal, except for one marker. My Platelet count was low (normal = 150 - 400). Mine was 134. RBC, WBC, Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, etc. all normal range. I'm waiting for results of a throat culture. ASO titers were normal! No Toxoplasma, no EBV, no CMV, etc.

I'm starting to freak out some. I hope it goes away soon. I was coughing a lot last night. I woke up in he morning and my neck/head hurt a lot. The top of my head even hurts to tap. [Frown] I'm just so tired.

My PCP said Avelox is a heavy hitter. I never tried it before. Should I? My blood doesn't seem to be indicating bacterial infection, but maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. Maybe I have an amoeba infection. [Frown]

Avelox is very broad spectrum. It would treat most all types of community acquired pneumonia (like CPN and mycoplasmas). Since you are still having the fevers and feeling miserable I would go ahead and take it.

It is a quinolone (I really like this family of antibiotics). I took it for awhile instead of Factive. Seemed to work just as well. It was a little irritating to my stomach at first so I had to take it with food. Then I tolerated it fine.

You've probably only been prescribe a short course to treat your acute infection. I wouldn't worry too much about having an extreme Lyme flare from the antibiotic. I would think that your body would be too distracted from fighting the infection. But who knows, it is hard to predict what will happen with our crazy bodies...

Good luck Seek!

Thanks everyone. I'm starting to wonder if I have a mystery UTI or something. My urine smells absolutely gross - like pure ammonia. No burning when I go, but yuck. I'm smelling things that aren't there. Everything tastes different too. Little appetite. I don't know what's going on. [Frown] My urine just produces tons of bubbles. It looks/smells toxic.

A few yrs ago, before I knew I had Lyme & co., I took avelox for a sinus infection. After the 2nd dose, I started having horrible anxiousness similar to the baby blues I had after having my kids.

Called the np who'd prescribed it and she seemed a bit irritated saying that what I was experiencing wasn't in the listed side effects for avelox but did go ahead and change me to amoxicillin.

Now I know it was probably a herx.

If antibiotics don't work, maybe try an anti-viral of some kind? You are right - your blood work does not indicate a bacterial infection.

But I wonder - would the immune system of someone with chronic lyme show an increased white blood cell count due to a bacterial infection?

Could the immune system be compromised and not elevate the WBC?

I have no clue about this - just thinking out loud because I was recently sick and my counts looked good too.

Turned out to be viral - but it made me so sick I almost took an antibiotic for it.

Good luck.
