Hello, I just started taking flagyl today. I am taking zithromax and minocycline as well. Just from this morning I am feeling horrible, I cannot think straight at all, confusion and disoriented. Very tired, freezing/or over heated, joint pain and uncontrollable crying. It's taking me a long time to type this, so instead of going deeper in detail, for future reference I was just curious, what would you consider "normal" side effects or herx reactions to flagyl? Because when I look up what the serious side effects are, a lot of the symptoms are very common herx symptoms. I just feel like I cannot function on my own. May type more later if feeling better, thank you!

It sounds to me like the flagyl is working on your babesia. I can't tell you what to expect. Hubby tried Iv flagyl and spiked a very high fever after 2 weeks. Now I can't get any of his docs to try even oral flagyl.

Be sure to call your doc if symptoms continue to worsen.

I suggest taking your temperature and keeping a record for a few days to see if your fevers are going higher.

Good luck.

herx - I would take a lower dosage in the beginning, there is no reason to suffer so much.

Flagyl is some strong stuff. If you were pretty healthy prior to LD I would suspect it's a herx. Flagyl hit my wife and I hard in the beginning as well, after a while I prefer to have my two weeks of it rather than the two weeks of biaxin because I don't get the horrid chemical taste in my mouth from flagyl.

As others have said, don't mess around if you're really getting sick to a dangerous point. Keep your doc informed what is happening. Make sure you don't touch a drop of alcohol as flagyl is very toxic to your liver and will damage it fast. It will also give you extreme hangover effects even if you had very little alcohol. That and it feeds the yeast and LD.

Make sure you take your pbx, vitamins, and supps and take them properly. Don't forget the LD has depleted your body's store of nutrients and the abx do their part to take them.

Yes, tell us how much you took.

All of the symptoms you named can be from herxing. So, if you started on a high dose, that really points to herxing.

Be sure you drink lots of water with lemons squeezed into it (not bottled lemon juice). That can help a lot to detoxify you and lessen the herx.

My lyme doc wanted me to eat 4 lemons per day to detox.

Thank you everyone, I am on 250 mg twice a day but for now only two days each week, I'm starting to get more herx like symptoms, body feels like it has been hit by a car this morning, last night after second dose extreme paranoia and anxiety played its part,
i just took my does this morning, I am feeling o.k rather then pain and lack of energy. But, we'll see once it kicks in. Thank you everyone again, it's just nice to hear from others who know where i'm coming from. Also just out of curiosity, anyone experienced horrible itchy eye while herxing?!

I get an itchy eye. It gets so bad that some nights I wake myself up b/c I've been itching it in my sleep - it's in the corner of the eye.

I think I have had solid nights of scratching it, but it only happens every once in a while. It could be when I'm on flagyl. I'll have to make a note of it next time it happens. I am only on flagyl 2 days out of the month.

And yes, I feel exactly the same way you feel on flagyl. It has gotten better after one year of treatment on it. My reaction isn't quite as severe. I remember getting lost in the grocery store one of the first days I took it.

Be careful of yeast - flagyl causes yeast problems.

That is a good dose and so your symptoms are very likely herxing. Many people find they must start out with lower doses. If you are dealing with this dose, that is good. You will get well quicker. If you can't deal with it, you can lower the dose. But, call the doc's office for advice before doing that.

My doc had me take 250 mg 3 times per day, every day for 2 months. I don't think I suffered as badly as you are describing. I had 4 bad days and then 3 half bad days and that was it. Then, a few bad days every 28 days for a few months. But, I was prepared for what was going to happen. So, that helps you to take things in stride.

Still, we are all very different. So, don't make yourself suffer to the point of going crazy. That is NOT necessary. Feeling sick is temporarily necessary.
