"Sunkar A. Bisey, a Hindu scientist in the early 1900s, was suffering from malaria and quinine didn't do him any good. His life was despaired of, and a Hindu doctor, hoping to save the life of India's greatest inventor, sent on a few doses of a Burmese preparation made from seaweed that had proved useful in treating chronic malaria there. Bisey tried it, and the effect was electrical. He began to improve at once, and in a month he was a well man. He set out to research the contents of the seaweed and ended up producing the compound now known as Beslin or atomic iodine. Atomic iodine is iodine molecules broken down to individual atoms, which is the exact form that the body needs to make thyroid hormones. If iodine is not in the atomic form, the molecules of iodine first need to be broken down, and that of course takes energy."

Marz - I personally think iodine is useful for ANY infection, since it's the single best antimicrobial on the planet. BUT I don't know enough about it to give any recommendations.
Unfortunately, there's just not a lot of data available for it, since the FDA and Pharma want to suppress it. A TON of diseases are cured and prevented with iodine, including cancers.
I think Dr. Brownstein is the one to listen to for the best advice. His blog is excellent.
I'm getting his famous book about iodine tomorrow, and (if the Good Lord wills it) I am hoping to finish it this week. I'll make sure to keep you updated and to post here if I read any info on how to use the iodine to get rid of infections.
One interesting thing that Dr. B says is that it's therapeutic for MANY diseases in GRAM dosages. That's a lot of iodine. BUT I wouldn't do anything without first being certain of what we have to be watchful for. I feel very certain about what dosages are safe for us to take for maintenance purposes, but I am still unsure about the therapeutic dosages.
One thing you should remember is that when you first start taking iodine, you might have a detox reaction because the iodine throws out the toxic halides (flouride, bromide, and chlorine) that have taken the place of where the iodine was supposed to be.
It's a tricky business, because some people might feel a little I'll when the first start taking it, but they just have to get over that detox reaction. The reason why it's so "tricky" is because 90% of the information out there on iodine is corrupt, incorrect information from Pharma and the FDA, who are trying to tell everyone that iodine is dangerous and that nobody should be taking supplements. Then our mind starts to play tricks on us and we say: "Hm, I wonder if the FDA's warnings are true..."
All I know is that I trust whatever Dr B says, and that's why I'm excited to read his book. I also know that I wouldn't trust the FDA with my baby toenail, so that helps me a little to discern who might be telling the truth.
Hopefully I'll be returning here to keep you updated.
If anybody else has info about this, it would be wonderful if you could share.
BTW I just used the nascent form for my first time today. It's STRONGLY alcoholic! I was surprised when I put it on my tongue! It was like everclear.
I'm not sure yet what is the best form to take. My current favorite is just to put 2% Lugol's on my tongue 4 times a day. Not only is that the cheapest, but I'm sure it must wreak havoc on the oral thrush. Hopefully in a few weeks I'll be able to have an assessment on whether or not it was helpful at killing the yeast.
BTW not only is iodine good for it's antimicrobial effects on the microbes, but this is the important thing that we should remember: An iodine deficiency results in a weakened immune system, and an iodine sufficiency helps us to have a strong immune system. THAT alone is good enough reason for all of us to be interested in it.

A great way to get iodine is eating saltwater fish and shellfish. Maybe, a weekly trip to Red Lobster, etc. would do the trick!

Trish - Hashimoto's is tricky business. Dr. Brownstein still recommends iodine supplementation for those with Hashimoto's, and he says that it usually helps lower the amount of autoimmune antibodies. He just recommends lighter supplementation than usual.
Also he strongly recommends selenium for those with Hashimoto's. Selenium is, of course, good for most of us also, even if we don't have Hashimoto's.
I'm going to be reading Dr. B's book about iodine this week (if the Good Lord allows it), and if I gain new info about Hashimoto's, I'll post it here.
P.S. You can't really trust what "regular" doctors tell you about iodine. Everything they've been told is wrong. For example, they believe iodine is a dangerous supplement that causes goiter and hypothyroidism, when in reality goiter and hypothyroidism are caused by iodine deficiency. It's not the doctors' fault - they've been brainwashed by the FDA.
