Anyone know which is better, Neurontin or Lyrica, for nerve pain for lyme patients?
Also, does either help with morning stiffness? Thanks!

you ned to try it yourself...every body reacts differently.
I couldn't take Lyrica got too "drunk" on it even at lowest dose. I tolerate Neurotin at only 100mg but still loopy on it.
My mom takes 700 mg of neurotin at a time w/no adverse feeling.
stiffness could be muscle spasms. If spasicity from nerves then Baclofen works on that.

BTW If you have to pay for it, neurontin is cheaper...Gabapentin is the generic of that.
Lyrica is very expensive since no generic for that.

I found Neurontin to be mind numbing. Also watch out for weight gain in both meds...

I could not take Neurontin, yet I did fine on Lyrica. I did not gain weight from it even though I was on it for a year and a half. Everyone is different!

Are these drugs for pain for numbness? I think I have a prescription for Lyrica but I never filled it. I don't want to take something to mask the symptoms. I want a cure not a bandage...

I have taken both. Lyrica did nothing but cause a 40lb weight gain in about 6 months time. I lost that over a year after stopping it. Now I take 1200mg neurontin per day. I have had a little weight gain, but only 10lbs and I've been on it for 2 years now. The gabapentin has improved my burning, helped my numbness some. My worst, and most recent, symptom was muscle cramping. That is improved too, but my neuro had me start l-carnitine to help that. So I'm not sure what that improvement is from.

Thanks so much for the responses...I have stiffness and some residual aching-like pain in my legs...I'm not sure whether Lyrica or Neurontin would help with this as it seems most people take it for stabbing pain or pins n needles....It's all so confusing....

I've tried both, twice. Both times the neurontin helped me, lyrica, cymbalta, and others like that did not. Even my LLMD said, yeah go with neurontin for that. I have to take quite a bit to find relief though..I take 1800 mg per day, but it's really helped me. That's in addition to my other pain pills..
They usually want you to try cymbalta or lyrica first, but neurontin has always been much more effective for me. It will make you a little loopy the first few days,, so beware.

Tried neurontin at 200mg which made me punchy and totally out of it.
Tried Cymbalta and it was OOOOOOOO AAAAAA look at all the pretty flashing lights.
I will not do Lyrica based on friends experiences with side effects. Apparently once you start it's a bumpy ride back when the time comes to stop. (I am being gentle with the wording)
As mentioned above you just need to determine for yourself which you are willing to try and what are acceptable side effects as opposed to your tolerance for the symptoms.
I've seen it stated many times here and stand as another example that when you're dealing more specifically with pain good old tried and true opiates are the safer bet.
Thats just my 2 cents which in this economy will buy you roughly 1/16 of a gumball.
