hello. happy Friday to everyone. I have been sick for almost 2 years with various symptoms. I went to see an LLMD, who gave me the impression that he really didnt think it was lyme, but told me to take doxy for six weeks and come back.
I have been so sick since then, which I have been told is a good sign.
I have had pluerisy twice in a year and waking up this morning, it feels like it's coming back again
so, I called my internist to see if he could recommend anything before it got really bad and he said that he read the report from the LLMD and he was suggesting is is lyme, but my internist disagrees and says to keep taking the doxy, but said that it won't help late stage lyme anyway.
AARGH. Has anyone had repeated bouts of pluerisy because of Lyme?
is my internist right that antibiotics wont help late stage lyme (if they decide thats actually whats going on)
and......if I'm having a reaction to the doxy, doesn't that suggest that its working??
so confused.
Thank you!

This is not what I consider a good first appt with a lyme doc. In general, he should have tested you and not tried to get you back to a neuro for sure. Would you mind sending me a private message with the doctor's name?
Just click on the icon of 2 people standing next to an envelope across from my name at the top of my post. Then, send me the name.
Also, if you got in to see him in a week or so, that is not a good sign. There are always waits to see the good lyme doctors.
I hope the doc told you to take the doxy in the middle of a meal. Otherwise, you can end up with terrible reflux and upset stomach from doxy. Eat half the meal, then take the doxy, then eat the other half of the meal.
And, I hope he told you to stay away from carbs--sugar, fruit, flour, pasta, potatoes, cereal, corn, etc. If you don't, you will be sorry because the doxy can give you a yeast infection in your mouth and stomach, etc. Then, you bloat and have abdominal pain and a white coated tongue. Blah!
And, don't pay attention to what your internist tells you about lyme. They think they know all about lyme, but actually everything they "know" is wrong.
Doxy is a good med to start out on to see if you have a reaction. If you have a "herx" reaction, that is the proof you have lyme. The doxy is killing so much lyme that you feel ill from the build-up of toxins in the body. Drink lots and lots of water with fresh lemon squeezed into it. That helps a lot. My doc told me to eat 4 lemons per day to keep from feeling bad.
If you have a bad reaction to doxy like the reflux, upset stomach, or sun sensitivity, that doesn't say anything. Those reactions are just normal side effects of doxy that everyone may experience, lyme or not.
But, you still will want to find out what coinfections you have. Most lyme docs test patients for these, even though the tests aren't totally accurate. They use labs that specialize in tick-borne diseases, like Igenex in Calif.
I had undiagnosed lyme disease for at least 10 years before a doctor figured out what was wrong with me. I had to search around to find a lyme doc that knew enough to cure me. The first 2 I went to couldn't cure me (both recommended by lyme support groups). But, the 3rd doctor did. It is now 6 1/2 years since I completed my treatment and I am still symptom free, enjoying my life. I have the same life I had before lyme disease.
Because lyme stole so many years of my life, I stick around this board to help point people to the best doctors.
Many doctors treat lyme disease, but not many know enough to cure a person of it. The doc is the key to getting rid of this disease, my friend. Can't emphasize that enough.
So, if you can afford a good lyme doctor, that's who you want to see right off the bat and save a lot of wasted time.
The best thing you can do right now is educate yourself on lyme disease. The best document to read to do that is the Burrascano Lyme Treatment Guidelines found here:
It is not an easy read because it was intended for doctors. But, you will see what good lyme treatment looks like. That will save you a lot of wasted time, money and effort.
See the proper dosage of doxy on page 18. Here is what it says:
"Doxycycline- Adults: 200 mg bid with food; doses of up to 600 mg daily are often needed, as doxycycline is only effective at high blood levels."
Translated, that means 200 milligram twice per day with food; doses of up to 600 mg daily are often needed...."
