Yes, it is possible. But, if the docs think you need IV, then instead of orals, they will likely put you on IM (intramuscular depot injections-- or shots in the butt, to put it in the vernacular). The IM Bicillin works really well--almost as good as IV.

Have you heard of it and considered it?

See this quote about it that appears on page 15 of Burrascano Guidelines:

"BENZATHINE PENICILLIN Comparative studies published by Fallon et. al. at Columbia University have shown that parenteral therapy is superior to oral therapy in chronic patients. Options include intramuscular long acting penicillin G (benzathine penicillin, or Bicillin-LA) or intravenous antibiotics. For an antibiotic in the penicillin class to be effective, time-killing curves show that significant levels of antibiotic must be sustained for 72 hours. Bicillin LA is a sustained release formulation that meets these criteria.

Published studies in children and adults, combined with over a decade of experience with this therapy by front line, Lyme-treating physicians have established the efficacy, safety and usefulness of this medication. In many patients it is more effective than oral antibiotics for treating Lyme, and compares closely to intravenous therapy in terms of efficacy if the dose is high enough.

It is usually administered three or four times weekly for six to twelve months. It has the advantage of being relatively inexpensive, free of gastrointestinal side effects, unlikely to promote the overgrowth of yeast, and has an excellent safety record spanning many decades. Finally, an added plus is that family members can be trained to administer this treatment at home."

Lots of folks on LymeNet have done it and posted about it, especially tips on doing the shots so you don't get hard lumps on your butt!!

Maybe do a search on "Bicillin" if you are interested.

Yeah, I have always been apprehensive about using IV because I'm more susceptible to clotting because of the Factor V Leiden mutation. However, I did like IM Bicillin. One has to take care not to inject into a main blood vessel if self-injecting as this could be deadly.

High-dose oral abx can work. I like high-dose Amoxy with probenecid. However, Flagyl or Tini should probably be used too based on the recent UNH abx study.

what's a probenecid .. So you're saying something like 500MG x'3 day amoxy will do it/help??

My LLmd has me on several abx's. My gut is telling me I need Amoxy. either alone or with.

But it's more than crossed my mind at least 4 times lately... My cd was low 8 and 30 and bart and babas neg..although syptoms are there..

so is this a step before asking for Bicillian???

More like 1,500 mg of amoxi 3 times per day (meaning every 8 hours). Per Burrascano, some folks need up to 6,000 mg per day of amoxi.

It worked for me. Took it with probenecid. The probenecid keeps the body from filtering the amoxi out of the blood rapidly. Essential to do the job that you have probenecid with the amoxi. Probenecid is not an antibiotic. It is just a med that keeps the body from filtering out meds from the blood as rapidly as it normally would.

Then, add in some flagyl to kill lyme in the cyst form. That's how I got rid of lyme over 6 1/2 years ago.

"*Amoxicillin- Adults: 1g q8h plus probenecid 500mg q8h; doses up to 6 grams daily are
often needed" (page 18 of Burrascano Guidelines)
