A tired, frustrated mom here. . . My 17 yo daughter has been treated for chronic Lyme since March--on and off abx since then. She was getting so much better, then had an appendectomy 5 weeks ago. Was finally seeming to recover from that after about 4 weeks, when she began having urinary tract infection symptoms and severe left sided flank pain. Treated with Cipro and most symptoms cleared except flank pain. Ruled out kidney stones with CT scan, infection seems to have cleared, but lots of stool seen on scan. So lots of Miralax and diarrhea. . . Now she is extremely nauseous, not eating, and flank pain continues. . .
Any thoughts? What works for nausea?? She is at least drinking fluids. She looks like a skeleton. Am planning on calling LLMD tomorrow, but he is long-distance and thought I would see if anyone has any thoughts tonight. . . .
Thank you for any ideas. . .

I had this same thing for about 4 months several years ago. Turned out I had Candida in my kidneys, as strange as that sounds. I took diflucan for about 6 weeks and it cleared it up.

Ginger tea may help with the nausea. So might peppermint tea.
Caveats: Don't use the ginger if gallbladder problems/stones. Don't use the peppermint too close to bedtime if GERD is a problem.
Candida in the kidneys sounds miserable!!!

Was she tested for bart? I have severe urinary tract, bladder, pain and it's all related to my bart. Nausea is also one the classic symtoms.
I've had bart for 25 years but only found out and started treating 3.5 years ago. Treatment can usually knock out those pains/nausea pretty quick if you use the right meds.
Rifampin, or quinolines are usually prescribed.
Can she tolerate drinking muscle milk or some other high protein shake/low carb? Some of them have lots of protein at least
I hope she feels a little better soon

I noticed on another thread of yours that your daughter is taking a lot of pain meds. That will seriously upset the intestinal tract.
I would say some of her flank pain can be from THAT!! See if you can wean her off the meds and maybe the flank pain will go away. She could be making it worse.
Whatever you take, take a minimum of at least 100 billion CFU's per day. Wish someone had told me that 10 yrs ago! Take all probiotics two hours away from any antibiotics.
DIET, DIET, DIET is the key. Then, be sure to follow the 5 step plan outlined below. It was developed by my naturopath. It works.
"Successful control and elminiation of a Candida Albicans overgrowth requires a multifaceted program as described below. Failure to follow ALL the steps simultaneously will result in slow progress and will lengthen healing time significantly. The program should be tailored to the individual and must balance the need to eliminate the Candida and deprive it of its food source while insuring proper nutrition for the individual."
Five Steps to Candida Elimination:
1. You must starve it into submission by eliminating its food source.
2. You must kill it with anti-fungal herbs and supplements. [e.g....garlic, onion, caprylic acid, Pau D'Arco capsules or tea, clove, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, Echinacea, Goldenseal, black walnut, MSM, barberry root, uva ursi, neem leaf, biotin]
3. You must reestablish the proper balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria in the digestive tract. [...multi-strain lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus capsules with FOS should be taken between meals to maximize repopulation of the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria.]
4. You must reestablish proper levels of all B vitamins (yeast free) and utilize other immune enhancing supplements to boost immune system function. [e.g ... B complex vitamins (yeast free), biotin, beta 1-3 glucan, colostrum, maitake mushroom, vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium]
5. You must cleanse and heal the digestive tract to promote proper elimination of toxins and Candida and assimilation of nutrients. [e.g...chlorophyll, MSM, omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed and salmon oils, GLA found in borage, evening primrose and black currant oils. Pantothenic acid, digestive enzymes between meals]

Well I'd had severe flank pain and nausea for about 4 months and had dropped down to 93 pounds - my Lyme doc was as frustrated as I was trying to figure out what was going on. At the time I was on meds for Bart, babs and Lyme and taking diflucan twice a week. He did a urinalysis and culture and the only thing that came back was Candida in my urine. I then started taking diflucan every day and about 4 to 5 days later flank pain, abdominal pain and nausea were gone - I felt soooo much better.
I took the diflucan every day for 6 weeks and then ramped down to 3 days a week and stayed on that dosage for the remainder of the time that I was on meds. Hope that helps!
