Thanks for posting this - very interesting article. I won't have a CFL in my house...too dangerous (bedroom ceiling light with CFL bulbs in it almost burned down my house; CFL's only lasted a week or so in the living room lamp but I can get years out of a regular incandescent bulb).

I bought a Geiger counter before I visited Japan, after the nuclear accident.
I wanted to test it, but didn't know how. How could I test if it really worked, if I had no radioactive materials at home?
After some time researching, I found out how: by ANY fluorescent light! When I turn them on, they emit GAMMA RAYS and I could see my German Geiger counter WAS working, and well.
It is amazing what we put inside our homes! GAMMA RAY to illuminate our houses!!!!
Gamma rays, maybe in low amounts, won't cause any immediate health trouble. But imagine decades on them, your whole life on them...
Gamma rays are the most known carcinogenic stuff on the planet.

The new compact fluorescent bulbs the government wants to see in every home, medical facility, and office, all contain the heavy metal mercury, and like all fluorescent tubes, generate light through cathode ray tubes, (as in an x-ray machine) releasing ionising radiation(x-rays, gamma rays, cosmic rays) as well as microwaves.

Actually, I just got a *great idea* for mercury free fluorescent lighting:
just fill the tubes with appropriately chosen radioactive material, and use a gamma ray to visible light phosphor.
These newfangled fluorescent light bulbs/tubes wouldn't even require electricity, yet would work for years, so there would be some real savings there!!
No ballast, no electrodes, no wiring -- one can't make it any simpler than that. I think I need to go and patent it right away....
----------- I found that in a forum, and thought it was funny. That maybe the next thing the governments will push us having home. No more mercury in the light bulbs, but full spectrum ionizing radiation!! At least, it will be energy efficient!!! Posts: 6196 | From Brussels | Registered: Oct 2007

I always felt bad that I hated the CFL lighting because I felt I was not making my contribution to eliminate global warming using the incandescent ones.
But the CFL literally make me sick - gives me migraines and causes depression. They emit such a harsh light it makes everything look cold and metalic.
I did not realize it was just the 100 watt bulbs that are being outlawed next year. I have stock piled a closet full of incandescent bulbs but they are not more than 60 watts!
In my kitchen I use the CFL because there are a lot of lights in there and they are left on a long time. However, one of the main reason those lights are left on so long it that it takes forever for them to warm up and brighten the room.
The fact is I don't like being in my kitchen so maybe I will change half of them out and turn them off when I am not in there.
