Can I take liquid magnesium citrate for constipation or should I take the capsules for on a regular basis? I ask because the liquid seems to work alot better, just dont know how often i can take it. If I can take the liquid kind, how much to take every day or every few days?

Could you post the brand you are using?

I want to be sure this is not some kind of liquid preparation used for medical tests where you have to first do a bowel cleanse. That stuff in the green glass bottle can be very rough.

There are some good brand of liquid magnesium. Cardiovascular Research (brown glass bottle) is one.

If you buy liquid (anything) it's best in GLASS rather than plastic.

You're right in that I don't think the pills have the same effect as a liquid for me, either.

But POWDER is much easier and I think just as effective as the liquid in a bottle - you add your own water.

Magnesium citrate (as in Peter Gillham's NaturalCalm power you put in water) is best 3 x a day.

Some like magnesium glycinate better. Citrate and Glycinate have slightly different effects so if one causes too loose bowels, switch to the other form.

Never take the full day's dose of magnesium at one time as that can stress the kidneys. It should always be taken 2 - 3 times a day and,

yes, on a daily basis. Magnesium helps the liver, helps nerve fibers . . . and so much more. It's one of the best support supplements for lyme treatment.

You would take it to bowel tolerance, some take about 200 mg 3 x a day -- but many do better with up to 1,000 mg - or even 2,000 mg a day (especially those with neurological issues).

Take up to the point of loose bowels and then back down a bit.

Calcium and other minerals need to be in balance, too. Hopefully, your LLMD has advice on brands.

Have you used other liquid brands? The powdered magnesium calm?

And are you talking about this drug store bottle helping in general for neurological and liver support reasons?

- or to relieve constipation? If for constipation, a rhubarb formula would be more nourishing.

I would choose from one of the brands in the above links - or from others that are intended for daily use as a nutritional supplement.

Those preparations in the drug stores are intended only for occasional use before lower G.I. tests or for surgical preparation. Even if you use just a little bit daily, rather than the whole bottle (as would be done for medical prep).

Now, it may be just pure magnesium citrate but I'm not sure if anything else is done to it or added.

- or of the source they use (where do they get the magnesium? How is it processed, etc.?)

You could take the label to your LLMD for confirmation as to if it's okay for daily use.

Still, since it is not intended for consumption as a nutrient supplement, there may be things in that which are not stated on the label.

A pharmacist should also be able to guide you about the exact contents and process.

The drugstore liquid contains 200mg of elemental magnesium per fluid oz. I have had to use it several times.

1 US teaspoon = 0.166666667 US fluid ounces

I take 400mg of magnesium citrate for calf cramps. 600 causes a clear loosening of the stools. 400 has no effect on MY stools. I have taken it with grapefruit juice before breakfast for 25 years.
