I am not sure what my next step should be. 14 year old son sleeping 18 - 20 hours a day. Started beginning of December after a short virus (sore throat, stuffy sinuses, cough). Those symptoms gone in 5 days. Blood work done twice. Negative for mono, cmv, luekemia, diabetes, cancer indicaters, even arthritis. All normal for red count, white count, glucose, thyroid, hormones. Should my next step be a Lyme test or a neuro work-up with possible sleep study? Everything else seems normal except for the fatigue. Eating fine, not losing weight. Not depressed. Any thoughts?

I'm too new to tell you the specific tests that should be run. However, when the regular Dr's tell me that "all your labs are normal", I change that in my head to "all the labs that they chose to run were normal".

The labs that my ID dr ran were all normal. However, my LLMD tested me for a billion other things and I was positive for Brucella,Ehrlichia, Lyme, etc, etc.

In the book, "Cure Unknown", the author's son started sleeping all of the time. That was her only clue that something was wrong.

Also, in the movie, "Under Our Skin", there is a part where all of the patients with Lyme are repeating what their Dr's told them "Your labs are normal", "You're fine", "There's nothing wrong with you", "Your bloodwork is fine". When in reality, they were sick.

Test for lyme, ehrlichia, rocky mountain fever, babs, bart, mycoplasma, aso strep titer.

Find a good llmd to guide you. Rule it out or deal with it if that's what it is.

Good luck.

That's how I got sick, triggered by a virus. Get to an LLMD asap.

I was lucky and tested positive on the tests that GP's use (ELISA, Western Blot), but I know many others have false negatives. I would try to find a LLMD asap, like In19944 said, just to be safe.

Have you posted on 'seeking a dr' board?

Is he able to attend school, go out with friends etc? Teenagers do sleep alot, but if its interfering with his ability to function then a further investigation is warranted. I know my 18 yr old, home on break from college doesn't get up till 3 in the afternnon somedays, lol.
