I have been on ABX since March of this year. I have been on azithromycin, Flagyl, doxy, Flagyl, azithromycin, flagyl, amoxicillin, Flagyl, and now doxy.

I know a lot of patients take Ceftin or Biaxin. Almost 5 years ago I had a reaction while taking Keflex for a bout of mastitis. About two days in I started getting an itchy rash and then air hunger. Unknown to me, I had Lyme at this time. I was able to stay on the drug for 4 days with resolution of my infection.

My MD won't prescribe Ceftin or Biaxin because of that reaction. Do any of you think it is worth a trial or do you think it is prudent to just steer clear of these drugs?

Is your doctor an LLMD?

What symptoms do you have left? Why do you want to try Ceftin and Biaxin? Just to rule out allergies?

I don't want to try it just to see if I am allergic to it, I would like another treatment regimen. Wasn't it Dr. B who stated Ceftin ultimately rid him of Lyme?

It is funny you are mentioning it as I used Ceftin and had cough and air hunger ?

Was it killing lyme and babs flared ?This is what happened again when I let my LLMD to try it on me 5 years later I knew finally I have had lyme.I started having cough and air hunger again and now after 3 years on treatment and chased lyme and bart and used artemisin -collapsed deeply from the car accident and babesia EXSPLODED and I ended up in blood transfusion.

With that said it could be posibly babesia was the bigger issu on me and was acting out when I tried CEFTIN .It took me so many years and now I know was BABS all these years and I was not allergic to CEFTIN and my llmd was insisting on me using CEFTIN.

Give it a try .I knew I was alergic to penicillin b/c I start coughing now I now it was killing lyme and I never knew .I have had lyme since than.

So today I started samples of Spectracef (cefditoren pivoxil) 400 mg. bid. Within 30 minutes I felt woozy, shaky, and had chills. My body temp went down to 96.2. I had some air hunger along with mildly increased heart rate. It has been just over 2 hours and this reaction seems to have subsided. Body temp actually up to 98 which is high for me. My head still feels a little loopy.

Well over an hour in I also had one episode of "something going off in my head" and then one episode of difficulty swallowing. This is a similar reaction I get since my new sensitivity/allergy (thanks Lyme) to red chili pepper. I didn't get tongue issue or prolonged swallowing issue I get with red chili pepper.

I should preface this by saying I tried this drug class in '07 for non-nursing mastitis. I unknowingly had Lyme at that time. I was having HPA axis issues, hence the mastitis. I could only tolerate Keflex at that time for 4 days since air hunger progressed and I developed a rash on my legs on day 4.

With this initial reaction, should I continue or d/c this drug? If I feel I tolerate this, I have a script for Ceftin 500 mg. bid. Feeling okay after two hours but am worried about the initial reaction after taking this drug getting worse and worse. Thoughts?

Sounds to me like you don't tolerate it. What about going an herbal treatment route instead, like for example, Buhner herbs? Also natural inflammatories, like curcumin and others?

How to find an ILADS-educated LL:

N.D. (Naturopathic Doctor);

L.Ac. (Acupuncturist);

D.Ay. (Doctor of Ayurvedic Medicine);

D.O.M. (Doctor of Oriental Medicine);

Integrative / Holistic M.D., etc.

Links to many articles and books by holistic-minded LL doctors of various degrees who all have this basic approach in common:

Understanding of the importance of addressing the infection(s) fully head-on with specific measures;

Knowing that support supplements are important, but NEVER enough alone. And knowing which supplements have direct impact, which are only support and which are both.

You can compare and contrast many approaches. . . .

Do not take another dose until you talk with your doctor about this. The problems with breathing are of most concern. This could be an allergy.

Question, though, did you take this on an empty stomach? Did your blood sugar maybe take a drop that could explain some of the reactions?

I assume you've ruled out other variables.

I've decided to follow my instincts on this one and d/c. I do have a script for a different ABX in the event this happened. I just wanted to try another tool in the toolbox to try to kill off the bacteria.

Keebler, I took it only after a cup of coffee. I have ZERO, and I mean zero appetite in the AM. I have surprisingly tolerated all ABX in this fashion.

Interestingly, my MD only prescribes single dose and I can honestly say I have made a lot of progress, particularly with neuro symptoms. I am grateful because I know others go for months to years without feeling improvement.

I just felt I hit a wall and was willing to give Ceftin a go. However, I'm not going to chance it any further. As the day has progressed I have felt okay. I still have mild air hunger but this is a symptom that can disappear for quite a while and then return. I've also had some mild itching, no rash yet, but feel I should call it quits.

Yes, I think the next step will be the herb route....not sure what protocol yet.
