D-Galactose. I have posted tons about it years ago up to the present. Biopure carries it. Do some search for explanation.

Good luck.

Thanks GiGi

Sparkle I've heard ornithine is good but doesn't cross the BBB

I wonder if it can detox ammonia from nerves/brain

BH4 will detox ammonia from the brain (BH4 - tetrahydrobiopterin); I believe Ecological Formulas makes it. Amy Yasko write about BH4. I take BH4, it works.

MY understanding is BH4 works in the whole body, but the brain is hardest to get to, and it definitely crosses the BBB

I was curious... 2 studies about the brain & ornithine - for what it's worth...

L-ornithine vs. L-ornithine-L-aspartate as a treatment for hyperammonemia-induced encephalopathy in rats.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9148009

CONCLUSIONS: The beneficial effects of both treatments on the manifestations of hyperammonemia-induced encephalopathy can be explained by a reduction in blood and brain ammonia concentrations.

Increase of the brain uptake index for L-ornithine in rats with hepatic encephalopathy.

Hubby had really bad hepatic encephalopathy years ago the first time he did IV rocephin. He tried the natural things including ornithine and I think citruline.

Anyway -- his problem turned out to be an overgrowth of various ammonia producing G.I. bacteria including klebsiella. After 4 or 5 months of this problem he went to another doc who gave him levaquin for his bart. Turns out that med works on klebsiella and many other G.I. bacteria. Cleared the ammonia issues up quickly (within a week or two) but didn't do much of anything for the bart.

Hubby had elevated blood ammonia and all the symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy -- especially worse after eating high protein meals.

Sparkle,

That's what I use. Ornithine/Aspartate

They say if you use it at night time and it makes you sleepy that it's clearing ammonia (that was keeping you up) and it's safe to assume ammonia is an issue.

Also it really supports the livers ability to clear the ammonia efficiently and in turn that helps clear brain ammonia (similar to ALA having profound effects on the liver, yet it can clear brain fog, etc)

seibert,

Did you and your hubby ever consider jernigans neuro antitox II product for his high ammonia issues?
