Has anyone done 4 gm iv claforan 1/day?

I was doing 2 gm/ day but read that it isn't in your system very long and also brought up that Dr B guidelines use a much higher dose and every 8 hours.

I am going to have the pharm split it into 2 gm 2/ day for next week. Until then I have 6 more days of the 4 gm dose. I did it last night and it kicked my butt.

I was awake pretty much in a panic until around 3 am. I guess it was a herx but maybe just toxicity. I don't know?

Also I am on it for Lyme but I have read some have used it for Bart?

Is that true? Maybe that's why it has hit me so hard.

Anyone? I really think 4 grams all at onetime is to high.

When I did Claforan, it was a much larger dose. Everyone is different though, and you should follow what your doctor prescribed.

Maybe this will help? Here are the general dosage guidelines for claforan from rxlist.com:
http://www.rxlist.com/claforan-drug/indications-dosage.htm

I would consider Lyme to be in the moderate to severe category so the dose would be 1-2g every 8hrs IV. Max daily dose for life threatening infections is 12g.

I have not taken claforan so I do not know if it is used to treat Bartonella. Hopefully others will chime in with their experience.

Good luck with your treatment. I hope that you find your answers and it makes you feel better [Smile]

I always thought it had to be given more than once a day.

Ya that's what I have read too because it clears out of your system very quickly.

Thanks guys.

Sammi what did you take it for Lyme or Bart?

Can you PM me what your doses were?

I will definitely follow my doctors orders.

I am just looking for some comparisons or reassurance or I don't even know! LOL

I gave the dose last night and about three hours later I thought the world was over.

I was so anxious confused agitated short of breath everything sounded very loud yet it was the middle of the night and no noise!

I finally fell asleep around 3 am after taking extra klonopin and ASG. Luckily I knew what to do but there was an hour or so I didn't think anything was going to help.

I have been in bed all day and I am very sore especially my shoulder joints.

Hopefully when you get through this rough patch you;ll see lots of improvement. I know that there are some meds that have made me think I was hearing people talking when I wasn't and yes, things sounded louder.

I thought it was med side effects but it didn't last so I chalked it up to cheetes dying off in my ears...don't know.

Hope you start to feel better soon.

Have been on it too. Didnt help me as good as rocephin. Also it stays in your system for only 1 hr. thats why its often given 3 times a day.

Dr B's says Claforan doesn't cause the gall bladder issues that IV Rocephin can. But LLMDs still use the latter WAY more than the Claforan [Cefotaxime].
I can only assume it works better for most patients.
But it sounds like the Claforan is kicking some butt for You. Stick with it.

I may be on "IV" one day, for what I think may be some elusive BB still tucked away in my nerve bundles... once I win megabucks. [Cool]

I wonder if the short half life of Claforan is the reason my md only doses it once a day.

It peaks kills then backs off. Maybe it keeps the bacteria from going into cyst form.

I am totally just speculating. I think it could make sense though.

I will ask the reasoning behind the once a day dosing.

Claforan was very potent in my case.

I was able to do it for one week only if I remember correctly9(2009). I had horrid herx on it or it was allergy reaction - so doctor took me off it.

Good luck.

I had that reaction with the Rocephin and my liver enzymes went through the roof but that was very early on in the treatment.

Claforan is processed by way of kidney. One can use it when one has elevated liver enzymes unlike many other types or IV ABX
