are the progesterone and estrogen creams that you buy in a health food store as good as biodientical hormones you would get from a gynecologist?

I believe the ones from the gyno are made at a compounding pharmacy. The product is made according to how the dr writes the scrip.

Dogsandcats is right.
My LLMD ordered my bioidentical hormones compounded just for me.
Some GYN's do not even know how to prescribe bioidentical hormones....some will only prescribe the typical run of the mill pharmaceutical hormones.

Your body may require more of one component that makes up progesterone etc...that is what makes it different. Compound is made especially for what YOUR body needs, not what they think we all need.

What you buy otc is very low in hormones. You should get a saliva test to see what your body needs.

One definately needs to test for your PROPER hormone needs. Too much of one (estrogen, progesterone, estradiol, DHEA, cortosol, tetesterone or too little of any have different causes and different effects.
Do not mess around without the guidence of a test. Best with a knowledgable doctor. Mine is worth every penny I spend. Same as working with a LLMD.

The PHYTO creams - Not that effective if you want my humble opinion! But phyto-progesterone cream actually made me feel worse.
It took me several years to find an over the counter bio-identical ESTRIOL cream, which works really well for me!
It's called Life-Flo Estriol Care, about $16 direct from the company.
Hot flashes disappeared, I slept better, and there was some return of other losses. If you can find a good Gyn who knows what they are doing with bioidenticals, I would definitely go for it. WHEN I had health insurance, mine OB/GYN was clueless! (She gave me UNLABELED compounded Testosterone cream, after I ASKED for Estrogen! The second prescription was labeled, so I refused to use it, and never went back to her!)
Some people have gotten relief with a high-altitude cruciferous root powder(from the Andes in So. America) called MACA. The natives have used it for hundreds of years to boost fertility and libido (for men and women) at high altitude living. I know that some women who were having difficulty conceiving (and talking about it online) got more "regular" on MACA, and conceived in a couple of months. I tried it, it gave me gas.
