A dear friend of mine has Lyme, diagnosed June 2011, and has had a gastric bipass in the past. She has literally been through hell and back trying to get a proper diagnosis. She was misdiagnosed for 15+ years and now that she has a proper diagnosis she is scared of how to properly treat this disease.
Does anyone else know of someone who has had gastric bipass surgery and treated Lyme?
By the way, she does have an LLMD. But her LLMD has never treated someone with gastric bipass!!!

Nice of you to try to help your friend. Good for you!
I can somewhat assure you and your friend that even though the LLMD you have has never treated anyone with a gastric bypass...
The LLMD, if an ILADS member, has access to at least a couple hundred other LLMD's they can easily get advise from if needed.
I see that going on regularly whenever a question pops up for a special case.
That gives me and others comfort knowing your doc and other LLMD's have access to the best of the best.

I've had gastric bypass. It's been about 5 1/2 yrs since I had the surgery. How much the surgery affects the treatment will really depend upon how long it has been since she had it done.
Obviously, there are different types of gastric bypass. And, therefore different types of concerns.
With mine.... I am stable with my weight. I have about a 5-8 pound range that i flip flop within.
I found that it can be difficult sometimes to determine yeast issues from the typical side effects of the surgery.
Besides that we deal with mal-nutrition, vitamin deficiency, etc. I am also considered immuno-suppressed. ANd, Obviously we absorb all oral meds differently. I like IM meds the best to treat lyme. (shots)
Many regular doctors don't know all the impacts that gastric bypass presents upon a body, let alone a specialist. It will partially be trial and error, as we are all different.
All gastric bypass patients don't respond the same. Some can eat foods that others cant. Some can take pills, that others cant.
Just as every person with lyme will respond differently to certain antibiotics. It will be the same for your friend.
Do you have any specific questions??
I'd be more than willing to answer anything that i can... But, need you to be aware that I am being treated by a lyme friendly doctor... not Lyme literate.
