Might want to make an appointment with your local doc and mention you are planning a trip to a country (NOT the USA) where you MIGHT be exposed to bugs that could carry infections. If you are traveling...
Doxy and Mepron are recommended by the CDC to be used DAILY before entering and while in an area where you might be exposed to bugs carrying malaria (babesiosis-like protozoa) and/or leptospirosis (spirochete).
Oh, and they also give YOU, the consumer, a choice of which drugs you want to pick from in case you MIGHT be exposed, even tossing in some cost-saving tips for you. Isn't that sweet?
And WebMD recommends you take doxy daily before you travel, while traveling, and to keep taking it for 4 weeks AFTER you leave area where you might be exposed.
And as a side note the CDC recommends using other preventative measures to avoid insects bites.
Of course none of this is recommended for any of us for the prevention of Lyme or Babesiosis when traveling in endemic areas. Heck, we can't even get it when we are infected!
"To prevent malaria, you take doxycycline 1 to 2 days before you travel to an area where malaria is present, daily while you are in the area, and daily for 4 weeks after you leave the area."
