Has anyone ever done IV's with a peripheral line instead of a PICC? I know some meds need a central line (due to being caustic) but are there any that can be used with a peripheral line?

Is it correct that these lines can stay in for about 4 days?

Is a mid-line the one that stays in for a few days? Can you remove it yourself or do you have to go back in for that?

I'm thinking about doing some kind of pulse dosing. Like go in on Mondays, get the line, and remove it on Thursdays or Fridays

I've done IV's with a peripheral line. I would have the line in for 4 days on of IV (same line) and pull the line after my day 4 tx on my own.

This would allow Friday, Saturday and Sunday as 'free' days. My nurse would come on Mondays and insert a new peripheral line.

I have also had 2 PICC lines. I had less problems with a PICC line than a peripheral line.

A Peripheral line requires frequent 'sticks' and in my case, my veins would roll away. Often it would take the nurse 5-7 attempts to get a good line.

I also had a problem with the Peripheral line becoming disengaged and with infiltration. None of these things were a danger in and of - but I preferred the PICC.

Rocephin can be used through a peripheral line as can Invanz. Doxycycline is caustic as is zithromax (i believe).

hope this helps.

undiagnosed22, thank you very much for your PM. I actually just sent you a very lengthy reply, but it didn't get delivered to you. The message screen immediately kicked back to me (with my message deleted?) b/c your mailbox is full. Would you mind deleting some messages so that I can contact you again? Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks guys. Maybe a peripheral line would be a good thing to try down the road if I need IV's.

I'm not ready to jump into either yet but especially a PICC because it seems so long-term. Plus, if I end up having an allergy to some of the main IV meds (which is fairly likely based on past reactions), I'll have put an expensive PICC in for no reason.
