I'm not where I can check my temperature right now, but I'm not feeling right. Is it common to have a fever during a herx, or should I be calling my picc nurse right now? I can leave work in an hour or so, but I'm nervous...

I get fevers when I herx. Mine are low-grade fevers tho... 99.5-100.5.

Hopefully others will chime in.

It never hurts to call and talk with your nurse!

Low grade fevers here, also, but I've never had a picc. Obviously, an infection would be a big deal. I agree that calling the nurse would be a reasonable precaution to take.

The picc nurse had me call my PCP, who said to go visit the ER at the hospital where I got it put in. Freaking out a bit here - I don't want them to have to pull it when I just finally got started!

Don't know your history. I think a lot depends on what previous treatment you have had -- orals. And also which antibiotic you are doing and the dose of course. Also which coinfections you might have could be important -- some such as ehrlichia/anaplasma, RMSF and babesia for example are much more likely to cause fevers.

And of course it makes a big difference how high your fever is.

Back from the ER. EKG normal, chest x-ray shows picc is in the right place.

Its a low grade fever and chest pressure. The ER doc didn't seem too concerned.

They drew blood off the picc and off a different vein, and are culturing it over the next couple of days.

In the meantime, they said to go home, and just let them know if the fever goes overr 101.5.

I'm very hopeful that all this is because I'm finally kicking some germ butt!!
