I am so SUPER frustrated because I posted a similar question a few weeks ago and I actually found someone on Lyme.net who has had a gastric bypass before being diagnosed with Lyme. They seemed like they were REALLY going to give my friend some helpful advice and this person has never responed to my messages. Even after they told me they would help me out!!! Gosh, this is so frustrating.
A dear friend of mine who was diagnosed with Lyme and Co's last year has also had a gastric bypass in the past. She is 31 years old and believes that she contracted Lyme when she was 14 years old. She has been through hell and back trying to get a proper diagnosis.
She was finally diagnosed with Lyme and she is currently seeing a good LLMD that has told her that she has only treated ONE gastric bypass patient and that person DIED.
If that isn't bad enough, I totally got her hopes up after telling her that I found someone on this site that has offered to give her some well needed advice. And she has been patiently waiting to hear back for a few weeks now and NOTHING!!!!
So please help me out!!!! Please let me know if you know of someone who can help my dear friend. She is lost in the world of Lyme and gastric bypass. PLEASE HELP HER!!!

- The poster who replied may be overwhelmed, exhausted, and may have over extended themselves.
That's why I usually have my PM function off. We may have the best of intentions and WANT to help but - when pressed - it can be impossible reply to any specific question in a certain time frame.
It's impossible to know when writing is possible and then, I know I just can't deal with any topic, only those that pour through my fingertips - I cannot summons what I want when I want it.
So, I hope your friend understands that if she or he had not heard back, it just may be impossible due to symptoms.
And - maybe that poster has not been back here since she replied to you earlier. Or signed in to see that she /he has a message waiting.
I'm sorry that your friend has had her hopes dashed with this part of her research - hope she still continues and find the information she needs. -

BTW, you and MANY others have help me SO SO SO much throughout my medical journey. And I am so thankful that you are here with great advice.
There was a time when I was going through liver failure and I believe the advice from people on this forum saved my life. I am so thankful to all of you.
I just wish I could do the same for my dear friend!!!

Her Dr wasn't helpful...did the Dr tell your friend why there may or may not have been a correlation with the death and prior gastric bypass?
Correlation does not equal causation. People who have never had a gastric bypass have died of Lyme. Just like there are people out there who have prior steroid use who have recovered from Lyme.
I know nothing about Gastric bypasses, however, it seems like any surgery makes us more susceptible to being unable to keep Lyme at bay any longer. Kind of like the "death by a thousand cuts" analogy.
For example, I was sick, but life was bearable. Then in 2009 I had a C-section=got a little sicker, March 2011 gallbladder removed=started going downhill faster than ever.

I had gastric bypass, in 2003. I was diagnosed with Lyme and Babesiosis in spring 2010. Started treatment in October 2010.
The doctor did a grave diservice to your friend if all he did was tell her his last patient he tried to treat died without details.
I am far from dieing and I've had many surgeries between 2003 and 2010 and have probably had Lyme since 20+ years and Babesiosis for 10.
Your friend should try not to worry about death as we don't get off this earth any other way. In the mean time, she needs to get online and do some research to make sure she is getting the nutritional support she needs due to her special plumbing AND follow her LLMD's lead and try some supportive naturals that resonate positively with her and that others have tried and perhaps recommend for eradicating Lyme and co-infections.
The only thing I can really talk about with any type of personal expertise is Babesia and gastric bypass.
I did mepron for 5 months. Shortness of breath came back with a vengence for 3 weeks just this past month. My labs were showing that I was becoming anemic. Talked with my LLMD and we both determined that Mepron was NOT absorbing due to my bodies inability to absorb fats (Mepron needs to be taken with at least 26 grams of fat for transport).
I just started Primaquine and Clyndamyacin combo to see if we can pound out the parasites. The jury is still out. Tonight I'm in bed because sitting up is still just a little too much for me right now. Not sure if I'm herxing or PMS or pain medicine withdrawl from recent surgery, but I'm spent.
My advice to your friend. Research! Try what feels right with food/naturals and keep on keeping on.
There isn't a magic pill for any of us - and having gastric bypass does put us at a nutritional/absorbtion disadvantage, but it doesn't even come close to having it mean a death sentence.
I'd be happy to speak with her on the phone if that would help calm her fears. Please pm me if she's interested.
Promise to not dissappear, but it might be a few days before I see a pm.
