Hi everyone!

I started Malarone a week ago and have had nausea, stomach burning, and daily bouts of diarrhea ever since.

The burning happens shortly after I take the med, the diarrhea a few hours after. Nausea most of the time.

I was incredibly dizzy for the first few days, but that has subsided some.

I am only on 1/2 of the prescribed dose so am leery of taking the full dose!

I know the regimen I'm on is supposed to be the most effective (malarone + art + zith) but not sure I can handle it.

Am I just intolerant to this med or is this a babesia herx? Any suggestions?

I take slippery elm as an antacid, but that doesn't seem to help much.

Thanks in advance :-)

Maybe DGL will help. It is good for GERD type symptoms, helps coat and repair the esophagus and stomach. Take/chew it 20-30min before eating.

My favorite brand is Enzymatic therapy's DGL Ultra, they have a fructose free sugarless "German Chocolate" flavored one that doesn't taste like chocolate but actually tastes good!!!

Anyways, it works, that's what is important and not flavor. It has helped me numerous times when a antibiotic combos started to chew up my stomach. Might be worth a try for you.

Take care [Smile]

Try Ginger Root capsules and increase your dose of probiotics. Do you take any Saccharomyces Boulardi? It's suppose to help the diarrhea.

Did you start all three ABX at the same time? Maybe drop the art for a while and see if symptoms calm down, then add art back in slowly.

My gut's been haywire all week too. I'm on week 8 of my second round of mepron, with zith, Bactrim, and IV Rocephin to keep treatment interesting.

hope this helps.

Thanks, you two!

gmb, I always leave at least several days in between adding new stuff, that way I have an idea what causes problems and what doesn't.

I'm cutting out the Malarone for a few days to see if that helps. I've had several of the other side effects that are listed with Malarone, too...

I have a MTHFR gene mutation, so I have side effects/intolerances with LOTS of drugs...

Won't Ginger burn my stomach? I feel like it's pretty raw in there...trying to eat bland and mushy right now.

The good news is my babesia symptoms are getting better...maybe if Malarone is the culprit, I can try a different drug.

I was so nauseous on Malarone that I switched back to Mepron. My LLMD said it was 50/50 which one worked better anyway. I can tolerate Mepron with no trouble at all.
