I don't necessarily want the expensive "package deals" that some independent labs offer, but specifically and only GABA testing. Does anyone know where to get this performed?
Thanks all.

- Unless done by a LLMD, this may not yield the information you want. Hopefully, your LLMD or LL ND can guide you. I just don't think the tests for the general public are specific enough to the changes in their area that lyme causes.
For everyone with lyme, GABA and NMDA is out of whack. I had some of this testing done and it really seemed worthless. I already knew that my NMDA is too hyper (it just goes along with lyme).
GABA calming neurotransmitters need help. That also goes along with lyme.
MAGNESIUM is the best remedy to calm the hyper NMDA excitatory neurotransmitters and that will support GABA.
Taurine and Glycine (both amino acids) will also help support calming neurotransmitters.
As for exact doses, it varies from person to person and from day to day, often. It just takes a bit of trial and error.
I've tried to take GABA but always got clobbered by it. Taurine and Glycine, though, seem to support GABA best for me. -

Keebs, what is NMDA?
Am already on lots of forms of Mg. Love it love it love it. Same goes for methylcobalamin.
I was checking out this product recently that includes 50mg Taurine and 50mg Glycine. I don't want to ask for specific medical advice from ya, but does that amount sound decent enough to start out with in general?
Unfortunately, I just can't afford a LLND. While my LLMD is great, he's not so much into the complementary stuff.
I have an Rx for gabapentin (Neurontin), which I've taken before just fine, but I want to establish a baseline first to see if I need GABA supplementation or not b/f filling it.

- Sorry, I'm just to tired to offer good reply. NMDA are the neurotransmitters that rev too much. You will find some good explanations here. Same process as with CFS, toxicity with lyme sends the NMDA guys into the party mode. Too much for us.
GABA neurotransmitters are overwhelmed so we can't calm.
In CFIDS, NMDA is more activated than GABA, lowering the threshold potential. This causes neurons to fire with very little stimulation, resulting in sensory ... -

- If you do well with Neurontin, though, that is a GABA agent and intended to calm NMDA hyper action. Neurontin or any direct GABA supplement can cause depression, though. I could not tolerate even a little neurontin as it made me far too tired and weak, and depressed.
I'll check back later to see what others have added. -

Thank you muchas!
I will check it out. I used to work with CFIDS patients' mitochondria in a clinical lab so I should be up on such things, but that was about a decade ago and I've not kept up with new publications and research very well. Boo-hiss.
Go get some rest in that tranquil tree house, dedicated gal.

- I would not suggest that supplement that you linked for 3 reasons:
D-Phenylalanine - can be far too stimulating
5 HTP (5 Hydroxy Tryptophan) - for anyone with liver detox pathway Cytochrome P-450 problems such as porphyria, they don't process tryptophan very well.
L-Glutamine - converts into glutamic acid and can be very excitatory for the brain, causing anxiety and seizures for those who are very sensitive.
I really have to rest now but will give some thought to another product that might help without the potential to causes anxiety. -

Hubby takes passionflower extract. Seems to work very well for him. Kava extract is another one which can improve GABA as well.
As for taurine -- he takes 500 mg 3 times daily. That is supposed to help with cardiovascular issues mainly -- he has a mitral valve prolapse murmur which was diagnosed at age 3.
I would check the websites below -- they may only offer panels instead of individual amino acids -- have not had testing from these labs in 3 or 4 years.

Thanks, Bea. I've checked out neurorelief, but not metametrix. Will definitely look into it.
Hope you and your hubs are having a feeling-better-today day.

I have been taking Gaba for a week, and after the first day I got tremendous results. My thinking is so much clearer. I almost feel like my old self, brain - wise.
