I have taken calcium and magnesium supplements together for quite a long time.
Since I have learned that I have calcium oxylate crystals (at risk for kidney stones) and osteopenia/borderline osteoporosis I am questioning whether I am taking these nutrients correctly.
In an earlier post from someone on this board I was made aware that calcium and magnesium compete with one another and need to be taken separately in order to be absorbed properly. Below is a link to an article that seems to confirm this:
"Calcium and magnesium can compete for absorption with one another in doses higher 250mg. When taking larger amounts take each mineral at a different time or split doses of combinations into smaller amounts (not more than 250mg)."
Also look at the chart that shows how some popular nutrients affect each other when combined.
Do you think this article has any validity? How and when do you take calcium and mag?
Also below is a link to an article that someone posted on this board a while ago that seems to indicate that the ratio of magnesium to calcium should be 2:1 and not the other way around in order to prevent heart attacks, osteoporosis and kidney stones...... there's no mention about whether the two should be separated for better absorption. http://www.nutritionalmagnesium.org/news-press/323-calcium-magnesium-balance.html
What ratio of calcium to magnesium do you take? Do you agree that the ratio of magnesium to calcium should be 2-1?
Have you found any reliable sources that prove or disprove the cal/mag issues discussed here?
Thank you all for your help. JJ

Thank you Atta for your input. How far apart do you separate the two vitamins?

I stopped taking calcium all together and am just doing Mag now 3x a day in between meals. When I did take the calcium it was with my daily vits two hours after when I ate my meals.
I never read anything on how long between the two and just decided to work them into my existing pill popping regimen.

I take a Cal/Mag supplement. I tried "Calm" but it didn't work too well for me or my son.
And I take baths in epsom salts, baking soda and h202... (epsom salts are a magnesium salt)

It is interesting that they are saying to take them separately seeing how the stuff we just bought is a Cal/Mag/Zinc with D3 (Nature's Bounty - no recommend)
Mag is 400 mg Cal is 1,000 mg Zinc is 25 mg D3 is 600 IU
Just started so don't know what the result will be.

Yeah, I was wondering about why they are combined too and asked my pharmacist-he mentioned it's old school thinking and mostly related to what people have come to expect in a supplement so the market supplies it that way. My doc reconfirmed they should be separate though so I split them.
I stopped taking the calcium on intuition I guess. The pill didn't want to go down anymore so I figured I'd try it without. It's been quite a few months and I never noticed any difference. I get a lot of calcium from foods too so that could be why I'm seeming okay without it.
