I have done both and like my port. I had multiple infections with my picc. The port does not have to be accessed all the time and can get wet when needle is out. The only draw back is it is surgery and anesthesia to get it placed.

It took me a week or two to get used to the PICC, but its been working out well for me (its about week 7). I'm very careful to keep it dry. I don't have any experience with a port though.
