Olive leaf extract gives me hot flashes, so I've stopped taking it. Does anyone else have this problem? It must be a plant estrogen. I don't know if that means I have too much or too little in my body.

I've never had that experience with it at either the low or the top dose - over years. But each person can have a different experience, partly due to the vast combination of possible variables.

1) What BRAND are you taking? Is OLE all that's in that?

They are not all the same. SEAGATE is the only brand of capsule I would ever use. Herb Pharm's tincture is good but it's best to avoid alcohol tinctures unless that's the only form available for a vital herb - or as a gargle.

But, still, if you have this effect you may stop it for a while and see how that goes.

2) HERX?

It could be a herx reaction as OLE can certainly cause a herx regarding spirochetes and may also stir up babesia reactions (which include hot flashes and night sweats).

3) What else, then?

If you are taking it to help manage candida, herbs with BERBERINE in them may be a good substitute such as Coptis, Goldenseal, Oregon Grape Root, . . .

If you can find a LL ND, that would be best.

How to find an ILADS-educated LL:

N.D. (Naturopathic Doctor);

L.Ac. (Acupuncturist);

D.Ay. (Doctor of Ayurvedic Medicine);

D.O.M. (Doctor of Oriental Medicine);

Integrative / Holistic M.D., etc. (Be aware that those in this category can have various levels of formal herbal &/or nutritional education, perhaps even just a short course. Do ask first.)

Links to many articles and books by holistic-minded LL doctors of various degrees who all have this basic approach in common:

Understanding of the importance of addressing the infection(s) fully head-on with specific measures from all corners of medicine;

knowing which supplements have direct impact, which are only support and which are both.

You can compare and contrast many approaches.

Find the herbal book for women by Tori Hudson, ND She is not LL, however, she is very good with matters of herbs in regard to women's needs. Just search her name. Amazon has, and some libraries have her book.

Thanks Keebler (not a herx for me)! It was Seagate. I get hot flashes within 5 or 10 minutes after taking it, and nothing else. I've pretty much pinned it down to that herb. I will check out Tori's book.

Could you be allergic or sensitive to the olive family?

I tried searching to find out if it has plant estrogens and, if so, how much. I cannot find that easily right now but you could give it a good search.

I would not assume this is an estrogen thing until you know the components. You might see the Seagate site - and call them tomorrow - to help get some clarity.

I wonder how would you really know that it's not a herx -- as a herx can be just about any reaction.

If you have babesia, as OLE has been helpful with malaria, it may also have some effects regarding babesia and could possibly trigger heat or sweats.

But, generally, OLE a "cooling" herb that is intended to help the body manage "toxic heat" and move it on out. I wonder if the hot flashes may be its way to move out the heat?

But, obviously, it's too annoying to continue and, if this may be an allergy, certainly stopping it seems wise.

Even if not a true allergy, maybe some kind of other histamine reaction?

Did you get this directly from the Seagate themselves? Not another vendor? You might want to check on that. It could be counterfeit, if not directly from them.

Do ask them about that possibility tomorrow. We have to consider that now with all Rx, OTC and supplements.

Are you okay with olive oil and with olives (but the vinegar in most would negate that test)?

Anyway, if you get more detail, it'd be great if you could come back and add that here. Thanks.

Hope you find relief and a good substitute.

They would want to know about your reaction so I hope you can talk to them on Monday. I've found them very helpful with all my questions.

Seagate OLE

Excerpt:

Side Effects: Olive leaves have been used safely for thousands of years as a food.

The only known side-effect is the possibility of a Herxheimer reaction, an allergic response caused by the rapid die-off of fungi that release toxins which may temporarily cause a brief allergic reaction, lasting for several days.
